One thing to remember is this isn't just about getting better deals on high speed internet - it's about getting a better deal for internet access, VoIP telephony as well as exciting services such as IP video on demand. ULL is going to allow companies like Slingshot to offer you highspeed internet as well as a phone line which means you'll be able to avoid paying Telecom anything at all.

RIP Woosh..:-)

freitasm:
sbiddle: Wonder how many people sold their Telecom shares this afternoon? :-)
Are you implying something? The announcement was made after the closing of the stock market (in NZ).

And there was no company wide email saying this was happening...

It's good news and bad news to me, I can now setup a lovely VoIP network, data network etc, and leech more bandwidth at microtelco's expense.

But then there is my employer... :-(

I was about to ask if anyone wanted to update the "They Can't Survive" thread in the Woosh forum.  They will be panicking even more than Telecom at this point.

This is a sad day for New Zealand, and New Zealand business freedom.

Telecom has been attacked for what it's shareholders expected it to do, maximise it's profit.

johnr: Vodafone NZ has been screwed over as well

Yes they have, wouldn’t it be great to see both Telecom and Vodafone move to a wireless high-speed broadband solution, i.e. in Telecom's case EVDO as a preferred internet offering??

This is some great news for Internet users but what about unbundling the local loop for voice calls. Or will Voip take off or will that be excluded?

I wonder how this affects Telecom Mobile Broadband Vodafone 3G etc as I would go with cooper ADSL and its speeds as my mobile is the odd email.

This will open up a whole new raft of issues.

VFNZ: probably really unhappy, because their business depends on the cosy duopoly with Telecom.

TCL: very happy, they've now got a business all of sudden.

I think johnr might be meaning the impending regulation of termination rates rather than the ULL decision?

Vodafone did not want LLU, just as Telecom did not. Vodafone wanted to enter the home broadband market via it's WCDMA network, and now this looks even harder for them. Vodafone NZ CEO stated that he wanted completion to come from networks (infrastructure) and not from LLU.

I hope everybody is unhappy in the telecom sector and the "price war" will start soon to win customers (us) using cheaper prices and better service!

There goes Woosh down the tubes. A $200M investment and now competition from a bunch of free loaders! The champagne will be flowing at the Slingshot Indian call centre.

Don't get too excited people. Telecom could run this around in circles for a couple of years yet. By that time ULL will be a mute point. What is Helen going to do, slap Theresa with a wet stick?
