Not that I completely agree with everything the guy says but I once heard (when he was on Radio Live breakfast) Marcus Lush say that he considered most people who ran for council to be people who had failed at whatever business endeavor they had undertaken and to sate the need for recognition/power/whatever had run for council instead.

Now, I'm sure that doesn't apply to all councilors everywhere but I know in the local council here a fair few of them fit that description and what concerns me in reading a document like that is how many of them would be fooled enough to buy into it.

kramgk:  Who owns the backhaul out of Wairoa?  I presume there is fibre between Napier and Gisborne, but is it open for new wholesalers or retailers to use?

You have a number of options to get connectivity to your network.

Fibre should already be run to your local schools, so you can pick up connectivity there.

It's also typical that small providers, with projects like yours, just used bonded VDSL to get the network on the road.

You also need to be thinking about competitive connectivity into your town from the likes of FX Networks.

In your planning and budgeting you need to also allow for consultation fees for someone who knows how to get data in to spaces like yours and then get them to sort it out for you.

As half expressed by others, some services on the Chorus network are regulated and can be purchased at Commerce Commission fixed rates.

If they want to go the wireless route, then maybe Pico LTE cells would be a better option?

And who's going to give them the spectrum? Are the council going to pay someone for spectrum access?

Early days still, but they are working on these for in the unlicensed bands, or there are also higher frequency bands that they may be able to acquire some spectrum for. I'm no expert on this, so is just an idea to through in the mix.

Who will pay for tracking down the interference?

Yes.  Spectrum isn't an issue.  By the time they get other infrastructure in place and their plan signed off and funding, the technology will have caught up.

Step one need to be to just start building something.

Haha comical. I'll put my bets on it happening and a similarly disastrous situation like the sewage system for the council north of Auckland.

Wairoa is the second most digitally disconnected community in New Zealand

Only a small part of Wairoa has access to VDSL and Copper land lines are in decline anyway

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Landline#Global_Landline_Decline

And the cost will go up, as chorus themselves have said

https://www.chorus.co.nz/file/48863/Effect-of-fibre-on-copper-bitstream-prices.pdf

Small communities like Wairoa are unlikely to see corporate investment in infrastructure and they are low down the list of priorities for government

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/wanganui-chronicle/news/article.cfm?c_id=1503426&objectid=11316392

time for small rural communities to take the future in their own hands I think .... How about helping rather than picking holes in it!

might be wise to disclose who you are in all this as you sound like you are close to or apart of this.

well if it were a well constructed and thought about plan then maybe there would be some more help, but when it looks like its been done by a 13 year old for a class presentation, and the concept behind it just isnt practical in any sense what so ever its a little hard to get behind it. :)

why not ask people (ie actual IT experts not the so called experts you have currently consulted) for suggestions on a better way to do it, or maybe spend the money getting upgrades to the cabinets in town to VDSL cabinets?

Wairoa has already been shortlisted for UFB expansion so to say investment in infrastructure is low on the priority list is blatantly untrue.

I'm all for communities building solutions, and the reality is that many communities who have poor infrastructure and are stuck on BUBA or Conklin's could easily see massive benefits by building a community network. With school RBI fibre being readily available in communities there are plenty of opportunities out there, with several already having being shot down in flames because people are unwilling to actually invest in solutions. Local bodies investing is a great way of such solutions getting off the ground.

Such investment and plans however have to be based around technology and solutions that will work. The chances of me winning Lotto this week are far, far, far higher than the proposed solution for Wairoa ever working as desired. It simply can't - and anybody who thinks it will work in the real world really shows they lack the knowledge of WiFi and networking required to pull off such a feat.

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/politics/10460390/National-lines-up-35-more-towns-for-UFB

Sorry all i can find is "At least a further 200,000 New Zealanders will get ultrafast broadband if National is re-elected, the Government has announced."   and that Wairoa are  "strong contenders" for the UFB extension.

Can you show me where we are on the shortlist please.
