Sorry all i can find is "At least a further 200,000 New Zealanders will get ultrafast broadband if National is re-elected, the Government has announced." and that Wairoa are "strong contenders" for the UFB extension.

Can you show me where we are on the shortlist please.

I would say that Haast, in South Westland has even less connectivity than Wairoa. At least you can get some sort of DSL connection. All of theirs is satellite.

Huh I never advised they were top of the list for UFB,

no ... but you did imply that we where on the list, maybe you should read the articles first before implying we are on the list! ... because at this stage as far as I know we are not.

John said they were the top in a Google Search (ie, the first result) - not the first to get UFB.

What part of press release and discussion documents that list of 35 towns and cities released that are "strong contenders" for UFB (that includes Wairoa) doesn't make sense?

The ROI process is a public document currently open for consultation for the UFB expansion funding.

Hi alll, i apologize, its just the comments saying that we had been shortlisted got my rile up a bit,
Just to be clear, we are contenders for the shortlist to be in the extension (i.e. we may get UFB after everyone else has it)

When we do get UFB it wont change the real issue which is our low household incomes, this makes it more difficult for us to pay for broadband. We for example have 4 kids and struggle to pay for the basics on a monthly basis, to me broadband is an essential so we priorities it but its not easy and we are better off than a lot of other families here.

kramgk: The Wairoa District Council is planning a metropolitan WiFi network for the town. Who owns the backhaul out of Wairoa? I presume there is fibre between Napier and Gisborne, but is it open for new wholesalers or retailers to use? The reason I ask is that the council's plan is to rate residents whether they use the new service or not. This will allow the council to undercut the existing suppliers and so make Chorus's copper system redundant. I can't see why Chorus should be happy with this, and simultaneously offer access to the backhaul out of the town.

Ok 1. Who cares how Chorus feel about it, they were/are employed by the new zealand government, they don't get to set the rules, new zealand government does. They are raising the cost of copper right across the board which means more money anyway.

2. All this talk about Wairoa having VDSL, who is aware of our speeds here? When my parents had ADSL 4km away from the Wairoa telephone exchange their average speed was 0.95Mbps download and 0.62 Mbps with a ping of 40 with Vodafone. When I was living 1.3km away from exchange my average was 15 Mbps download and about 3 Mbps up, also with an average ping of 40 with Vodafone.

In short, In Wairoa, copper suxs.

3. Now I am on Gisborne Net (http://about.gisborne.net.nz/about-gisborne-net/) with downloads averaging 25Mbps and 20Mbps up, using wifi technology similar to what will be used for Wairoa Wifi. I don't have a phone line but if someone else wanted to keep their landline its only $11.50 for VoIP with 2Talk (http://www.2talk.co.nz/home.html).

and yes I pay rates.
