You would never provision such backhaul anyway, it would only be 1Gbps tops which would possibly set an RSP back maybe $2-$3k per month to get it back to their POP. That's excluding any hardware costs or any data cap. That's why small scale solutions can't work unless people are willing to pay more for their broadband.

You could easily run 100 users off a 100Mbps backhaul providing you aren't going to offer unlimited plans because the few that choose to exploit it would run it for the other 98 users.

Chorus upgrading their equipment and moving to Ethernet based backhaul could still be in the vicinity of $100k - $150k

I am going through a similar issue with our broadband. We have a fibre fed cabinet but its only 5mb area but we are all down to 0.5mb in the evening/weekends etc. There are probably about 50-70 people on the cabinet. Solution from Chorus, cough up 35k plus gst and you get a 1gigabit fibre plus upgrade to vdsl/adsl2.
I have got all the cost details and maps from Chorus, now comes the hard part raising funds to get the upgrade. Alot of folks are not fussed as they dont use much internet. The angle to push for these people is that they might have trouble in the future selling their lifestyle block without good internet.
In the Uk poor internet equals upto 20 percent off your house price.

Also push that fact that kids now do so much of their homework on ipads/net etc.

You need to get Chorus broadband coverage maps with electoral rolls to see where people are what internet they will get (Ask Chorus for this) and then start raising funds. Suggest those close to cabinet that will get vdsl, chip in more etc.

I'm not sure I believe 20%. If we accept however that it is true, and then assume a median house price of What? let's say $400k nationwide, then that suggests everyone should on average be happy to spend $80k contributing to better BB access for their house, based purely on house value.

Clearly almost no-one is going to spend that much.

I'd suggest that the headline figure of "Up to 20%" is probably more like 1/10 of that. Even then I don't think many people would spend $8k of their own money to get a better BB connection. Now, I am sure they'd be happy for the government or ISP/Telco to spent $8k or $80k.

That's the UK though. Not really relevant here. I've never heard of a house value increasing due to broadband.

Outram is an absolutely wonderful place to live, you should visit some time, we have many amenities, a great community, very good school, a super swimming hideaway at the glen etc etc. Are we more worthy of an upgrade rather than another township in a similar position, yes no maybe, my answer would be biased so sorry I can't answer that.

I know we're asking for a lot but we have to start somewhere and if more communities petition or go their own way it does show there is something wrong. Upgraded DSL is the easiest path for the families as they don't have to change anything.

I know the Schools connection is not an option, knew that ages ago... Door knocking; I got lots of the "your the guy with the petition, where do I sign" and "I can't use skype in the evening to talk to family" etc, one other interesting comments are those Vodafone Sure Signal boxes, don't work too well with congested Internet. But no I didn't actually ask about if they had the option to pay more for a vastly superior service how much would they be willing to pay but I will, should have thought of that eh... I know we're not alone which concerns me somewhat but we do want what everyone else gets (human nature) and society is now now now you know...

$35k would be easy to fund raise but for only 50-70 people that's the hard part. If that figure was similar here I think we could get there.

When i dropped off the petition to one of the Cafes here we talked what is was about, one of the assistants said they were thinking of moving out here but now knowing we don't have fibre and get terrible congestion means they are having second thoughts, her partner had just got fibre in town and really likes it. So it is something that is on peoples minds, we have a new 24 lot subdivision going ahead at some stage soon, would be interesting to see what comments come after that goes ahead, would be just our luck Chorus run a new cabinet to the area.

I have been to Outram. Admittedly, it was 1995 (before the internet really took off in this country) and yes, it is a lovely place. But Blackball on the West Coast is the same size as you, and can barely get ADSL. Having local familiarity of an area, of course you're going to have a bias. But I still am a bit pushed to see why you should jump the queue ahead of, say, Haast (as I mentioned earlier) where all their internet is satellite. They're bigger than you, too, with a population of around 500. But they don't even get ADSL. Why do you think you deserve it ahead of a larger centre?

The ODT have been doing a lot about broadband recently - but need to get some facts straight.

Their story on the weekend with residents in Karitane made no mention of the brand new fibre fed RBI cabinet delivering VDSL2 and ADSL2+ that went live last week covering parts of Karitane. Sure it doesn't cover all of the town, but if the media and residents are going to jump on the bandwagon they should be at least ensuring accuracy in their articles rather than giving the impression nothing is happening. I raised this with the journalist concerned.

Outram has 708 residents at the last census, 65% have Internet connectivity compared to the average of 59% for Otago. Not trying to belittle Haast or anyone on the West Coast, because we are all in a black spot there is no queue to jump as such, we're trying to get out of the quagmire...

I've only had a quick skim, but from what i can see this area is outside of the UFB zone and will be getting RBI wireless coverage, correct? The above is what it comes down to to be honest, as mentioned above this is the first question that should be asked, if the UFB coverage should be extended to this area, why not all other areas too? Or should it be only some of them? In that case, where is the line drawn? And then if you're going to extend it at all, how much extra funding is being put into it and where's it coming from?

Everyone of course is going to mostly only care about their own situation. And the way I see it for the UFB project, a line has been drawn with whats being covered and what isn't. There's plenty which is on the fringe and won't be included.

A local example to up here in hamilton. I know people who live on a street which less than 900m from a main road on the edge of hamilton that got fibre built last year. But because its considered outside of the build area, they will possibly never get fibre. They have 4mbit DSL which drops out all the time, and when it doesn't its barely usable.

And the insult to injury? A backbone connection to connect to a regional town that will get the UFB build runs past their road. And thats just how it is. Even though they have been campaigning for years and years, even before the UFB project existed, to improve their broadband. So what have they done? They have worked with a local wireless ISP that last year has now installed a wireless repeater at the end of their road and is offering 15/5 connections to these residents at a very reasonable price, much cheaper than RBI. IMO this is a great solution, and while its not as fast as what fibre is, they have taken some logical steps to do something about it.

Complaining to chorus or any branch of the government IMO is a waste of time and manpower. I would do what this small community did, and try and turn some wheels that can actually be turned. Contact local WISPs, ask what solution could be viable. Drum up support for it and collect a pledge of people who are willing to sign up to the service. This is actually a grassroots effort that can actually result in something coming of it.

I might have missed something special about your situation because yes i didn't read everything in this thread, but imo thats what it really comes down to, plans are set up, a line is drawn based on a set of criteria, and some areas simply will not make the cut.

NZtimbo: I think if, and there are, other townships with this issue they should also petition. As they are also outside the upgrade areas they need to take the initiative.

We pay city rates, higher regional council rates, house prices are almost as high as the city, we pay more commute costs and we are not complaining about any of that. As I've stated before Chorus have made network changes and now we have terrible congestion, one simple solution is get the govt to add us to the upgrade map.

I went back and had another skim of the last page, and I don't think people with the loudest voice is a good way of deciding who should be on the exception list, if there was to be one. Suggesting that every other town, suburb or even a tiny community off one road (as i mention above) should complain themselves to also get the privilege doesn't make sense to me. I also don't see how your rates, house prices, and commute costs etc are relevant here. Your choice of lifestyle and location is exactly that, your choice, and thats all.

Now if an area presented statistics showing it how very fast growing it is compared to other areas in the country, how much housing developer interest there is, how the school needs better connectivity for learning etc then I might think hey perhaps they have a well researched case where a large hole is forming and i wouldn't be so dismissive. But simply having the loudest voice? I'd be very disappointed in a logical process if that worked.

Correct no UFB or RBI (DSL) and cell phone coverage is patchy, but wireless RBI isn't a current option for families considering install and plan/data costs. City Rates etc comments were in reply to a prior post so reading it alone will be out of context... the school got a UFB upgrade, a new fibre was run straight through town, past our exchange to the school yet with the congestion homework assignments done on the school ultranet are difficult at best.

Understandable and seems very logical to have something in terms of xDSL or Fibre in your spot.

RBI wireless will have to be an option frankly. Its the solution for the area and they are lucky to have something. Try living in Te Kopru near Dargaville and get fast DSL. They got RBI though :).
