Tell me if I get this wrong - but you want to live rurally, but aren't happy with the RBI in a nutshell?

Correct no UFB or RBI (DSL) and cell phone coverage is patchy, but wireless RBI isn't a current option for families considering install and plan/data costs. City Rates etc comments were in reply to a prior post so reading it alone will be out of context... the school got a UFB upgrade, a new fibre was run straight through town, past our exchange to the school yet with the congestion homework assignments done on the school ultranet are difficult at best.

If you think that RBI is expensive you really need to be raising your issues with the MED and/or Commerce Commission, as do all other who have issues with the service. The service is being funded, and they need to be made aware if there are consumers unhappy with the broadband service that is being made available to them.

Despite having posted this numerous times on here and in other places suggesting people I've yet to see anybody post a response from either. I for one would be very interested to see what they say.

How is this any different than people who choose to live in Auckland and then saying that housing is too expensive there? They have a choice of moving to a less expensive town or city.

Can you approach Council and ask about a targeted rates increase to pay Chorus for the upgrade? 100 users, $350 extra in rates (maybe even split over 3 or 4 years)? Surely Chorus would listen to a council waving a cheque book (certainly much more than they will listen to a private resident waving a petition).
If the majority of Outram sign you petition, you need then to go back to them and ask if they'd be prepared to pay. A small rates increase may be the best way to do this (then the broadband costs the same as the city, but living their costs more - rents would have to increase etc to cover it).

Then how about $110 for 30 GB,

and again we get back to the nub of the issue, what are you prepared to pay for a "good" internet connection.....

If its nothing more than urban UFB customers, then the arguement is over as Chorus/vodafone/martians are not going to invest additional capital to provide a service to a small number of distant customers and get no return on the investment.

Totally agree. Take what you save on mortgage and put it into broadband! Comparing Outram house prices to Auckland you could probably take a privately installed 10Gbps fibre and still have some change!

Tim, you've taken a fair bit of flack on this post and remained calm and non-defensive. Good on ya :) This is what good debate is all about.

Absolutly those are options, and there are other options than Wireless RBI too, if the House of Representatives reject the petition then the next stage is for the community to come up with the best alternative for us and approach Council, Chorus, Other Providers, Residents etc etc etc with a plan. We cannot continue to accept what we currently have "going forward", we, our children, businesses will suffer in the long term. Having said that Kiwis seem to be very accepting at times and too scared to speek up for fear of being told to sit down...

With many things you start somewhere and end up somewhere else...

I still think our voice as well as other areas in a similar or worse situations needs to be heard.

Lets leave mortgage and house prices out as yes many houses in Outram would fall under the average house price in Dunedin but ours and many others are much more. Not saying I well off or anything, built 9 years ago and loving it, electrician by trade and step-father chippy. Houses sell in an average of 8 days there.

Then how about $110 for 30 GB,

Pretty sure you can get 30GB for $99 incl phone these days from one of the providers. Last time I looked you could also get 100GB for something like $199

Exactly, the internet is there for us to utilise (consume), so we stream music from di.fm/sky.fm allmost all the time, watch documentaries when we can, update ourselves on current events, my daughter does her homework via the school ultranet and all the other good stuff it brings...

When you look at the Chorus Network Availability map for the areas around Dunedin, it does seem strange that you have been left out. With the Broadband filter and the RBI DSL filter applied, there are much more rural areas than Outram which are covered by a congestion-free fibre fed cabinet.

I wonder how the lifestyle blocks around Mount Cargill managed to bag themselves an VDSL capable RBI cabinet? A cynical person might think someone important in the decision making process lives there..

Must be for future growth , I have wondered that myself in Waitati valley but I guess if the area was air marked under the RBI to deliver fixed line services , Chorus was only going to put in a new RBI bullet cabinet not a old Conklin like we have in Warrington and other areas alike .
