My parents can currently only get ADSL in their Auckland street - they're getting 3.5/0.7, which I suspect is due to their 1970's house wiring. They are listed on the Chorus map as being due for upgrade to UFB between June 2016 and July 2017. They'd really like to get into some of the online services available, but given it's a challenge to stream YouTube sometimes, it's probably not worth their while yet.

However I noticed while walking the wee one to school today that there is marking on the footpath at intervals between their house and the end of the road in pale purple spray paint. The symbols look like -: with the line starting on the road, running up over the kerb onto the path, and ending between the two dots on the path. They are on both sides of the road. Next to one there's a word that looks like Cholls (but might be Chorus, now that I think of it).

I know that purple generally means telecommunications, and that UFB currently runs right up to within about 5 of metres of where the last purple marking was. Am I being too hopeful that the marking could indicate UFB work about to start? Or is it because someone is about to dig up both sides of the road for other reasons?

We'll keep our fingers crossed for you, but it could be just about any contractor that has requested existing services be marked out so as to not chop the cables in the ground while doing work.
