The "3 strikes" law came into effect 5 years ago, September 2011. At first none of the copyright trolls did anything, but then the RIANZ decided to give it a crack. They started off with a hiss and a roar in 2013, 16 cases were heard by the copyright tribunal, the average fine was $511.  In 2014 things slowed right down, only 3 cases were heard, resulting in an average fine of $800. The last one to reach the tribunal was in Feb 2015, for allegedly infringement in august 2014, and the tribunal threw it out because RIANZ had issued an incorrect notice.  Neither the RIANZ or any other copyright troll has even bothered to lodge an action in the last 24 months because they've figured out people are not going to be given bankrupting fines like in other jurisdictions.

So in 5 years, 20 enforcement actions have been taken under the new act, 19 resulting only in small fines, the average of which was about $550,  out of how many million or billion pirated downloads in NZ in that period?

Bearing that in mind, I ask you, why would you even bother with a VPN?
