Chorus had just announced the www.gigatown.co.nz initiative.

More on this later...

Wonder where it'll be first.. presuming it will spread to the rest of the country once it's underway.

Looks interesting. It's probably going to be GPON and do 1gb down and 100mb up or something similar.

would be nice if they put it in an area that wont be getting fiber under the current UFB role out (wont happen) but dreams are free :)

I do doubt that. I think they will just upgrade an existing UFB Area.

Seems like a really interesting plan. Cant wait to see it implemented.

If they pull it off it will set the bar high for the future.

To be the fastest internet in the Southern Hemisphere it is going to have to be 10Gbps won't it?

That is freken epic to have in a home but I do find it hard to find a proper use for it. Or am I being a little short sighted? I would of thought most residential customers would find it hard to use 100Mbps.

And I can't watch that video from Snap ADSL but can from Vodafone 3G hmmmm.....

Chorus has 25 areas... and about half of those are "towns". I have my fingers crossed :)

I don't think anywhere has specified it's just residential... enabling 10Gbps internet connectivity in the business district of a city or town could be a huge boon to the existing businesses, and to draw new ones to use the area as their HQ.

So they want us to know they're going to do it, but it's also a big secret. Ba Humbug.
Tell us what your doing = interesting. Pretentious advertising = why should we care.

Ok, back home now. I was at the Chorus announcement here in Wellington, and their folks are in really high spirits about this. Some have very enthusiastic views of community participation and I can see this working pretty well.

Some on Twitter called this a "gimmick" but really is no different than what Google has done in some USA counties and they called that initiative "innovative".

I think it's a great opportunity for communities and we will see some "heroes" rising up to the challenge.

snap VDSL, played perfectly fine.

sounds like an awesome idea, i suspect it would be put in a rather popular area that is deemed 'worthwhile'. but then spread?

in terms of the fiber in the ground currently, am i assuming right in that it would support 1G if say, all the connection points were upgraded to the required hardware?
