I live at Rapaura, about 8k out from Blenheim. I am only 400 metres from the Telecom box which happens to be directly across the road from a school, and Chorus laid the big green fiber cables to the box nearly two years ago. However, the box has not been upgraded to ADSL2 yet, and there are no plans to let us access the fiber with UFB, and for the most part we are lucky to get 1.5Mbs during the day and evenings, and 3.5Mbs over night.

But here's a funny thing. I recently started using Free YouTube Downloader, and for some reason, it absolutely flies! It can sometimes show 9 or 10mbs, and download a ten minute video in 720 in just a few minutes. Si am wondering if Telecom somehow throttle web traffic, or I can access that obviously available fast speed for normal use?

I have an uncapped 120Gb/month plan using the Dlink D604T modem with f-secure and Windows 7 Pro, plus a second computer also with Windows 7 and f-secure, both hard wired to the modem. There are no other properties near enough to see our wireless signal.

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

sounds like a conklin, although getting up to 10mbit on one doesnt sound right.

looking at the area, most of it is Planned RBI.

need to know more details to look up anything in detail about the rollout for you though.

It seems like your on ADSL2+ otherwise you would never get over 7616.
I would suggest this ADSL2+ node isnt congested otherwise you would be on ADSL1.

You're only connected to an ADSL1 connection which will either be a Conklin or an ASAM and syncs at 7616kbps.

Getting speeds of greater than ~7Mbps is physically impossible.

You are connected to a Conklin.. But on the upside the cabinet SCK/P is due to be upgraded under RBI in June 2015.

I spoke to some Chorus guys who were working on the box last year after a lightning strike knocked out some phone lines. They said that the box was still using a Conklin, and that there were was plans to upgrade to ADSL2 some time this year. AFAIK that has not happened yet.

I'll see if there is anyone local who will fit a Master Splitter, and definitely look at a new modem router. Do you guys have any favourites?

A master splitter will not make any difference at this stage and neither will a new modem (even though those modems are pretty poor). You're synced at 7616 which is the maximum sync speed of the Conklin.

The upgrade will happen as part of the RBI rollout, the dates of the rollout were all set around 2 years ago when the rollout started, so the Chorus tech was probably being a little optimistic when he said this year.

You are connected to a Conklin these have very limited capacity / back haul are only ADSL1 save your time wait for it to be upgraded before really doing anything
