no get the samsung evo. kingston is around 300MBps transfer speed, samsung evo around 600MBps transfer speed (something of those magnitude, those aren't exact of course i had no time to look them up)

not all SSDs are created equal.

Hmm price starts creeping up tho.... ;)

This is what I'm looking at. Not a huge speed difference (in theory) between them.... thing is, you say Samsung, someone else will say Corsair, someones else will say Intel and so on.... ;)
I'd rather bite the bullet and get using it :)

I personally have a ssd with the OS and a big sata drive for everything else including games as I am only an occasional gamer. that being said having your favorite games loaded on your SSD makes sense.

Would strongly recommend biting the bullet, scraping the pennies together and getting the 512Mb Crucial MX100 for $212

Brilliant value for money and works really well - just put one in my wife's Macbook pro. (bought from Amazon.com)

No-one ever regretted buying more storage and if you are a gamer, it is surprising how quickly one's Steam folder can balloon in size and the 250Gb fills up.

Heh, Im not a huge gamer (on PC anyway) anymore, my Steam folder went from 120GB+ down to 60GB last weekend after a clean out of games I dont play. Storage space isnt an issue for me (got oodles of drives sitting in a cupboard), just more after speed now ;)

Samsung Evo from Amazon.com is probably your best bet.

I have the Crucial M500 250Gb as my Windows/boot partition and a new Evo 250gb as my Steam/Games drive and the latter benchmarks significantly quicker. 250Gb is enough for your OS and current 2-3 games...

I configured Windows to redirect the various default music/video etc folders to my 1TGb platter drive to keep control of space creep.

(presume your MoBo has the requisite SATA 3 6Gb controllers to make full use of the speed boost?)

Both. Install the OS on the SSD. Then install games to HDD but use junction points to move the ones you're currently playing (or frequently playing) onto the SSD. Doing it this way you can relatively painlessly swap games back and forth between SSD and HDD :)

surely you can afford this? yes i will say it again not all SSDs are made the same. having said that you need sata 3 to get speeds above 200MBps (that's bytes not bits)

the only other that i know that achieves those speeds are the vertex 4 and some intel something

Super fast boot and general use, plus games you regularly play having priority.
Definitely redirect download and photo/video folders though, and prolly need to do cleanup maintenance once a month to deal with 'update creep' too.

Bite the bullet though! ANY SSD whips spindle hugely ;)

just remember that some of the cheaper SSD do not come with a 3.5" to 5.25" mounting converter, which you will most likely need for your pc. You need to check what included and if it not, factor in the cost of a convertor when comparing price.
