Mirror in addition to a backup sounds like a sensible plan. My planned mirror was going to be of different brands of drives too, but I couldn't find similar speed drives so I got two of the same type from (I hope) different batches. I used different sellers anyway.
I plugged them into power and data cables, turned on pc then heads came free and I could access data. Did not turn off power until I could save what I could
Over the years I rescued 3 drives with data, however, this was back in 1999 to 2002 and none of the drives were over 500gb.
I was sceptical when I first tried it but thought nothing ventured.....

Actually they are part of my backup at the moment.
But, I will retire them soon and use them as temp (can be lost) storage.
There aren't too many cost effective ways of backing up a lot of home storage.
I use a combo of mirror, backing to drives on another PC and tape for really important stuff.
