my powerbill at home is 299/month max!....1 x 42u rack..2 x servers....2 x 16bay storage devices and all the other rubbish turned on at home...3 of us living at home.

I beleive that to be quite cheap compared to some people...

Agree, many people seem to go nuts, but that seems a lot to me... For me last month power and gas together went up 40% to 199. 4ppl

Back on topic.
That 16 bay sounds great.. but overkill in a modest home. Are you offering it free? :P

Regarding OS, is the W10 free upgrade dependant on flavour i.e W7 home vs pro vs ultimate? ...

You require special low-voltage RAM for an NUC - you can NOT recycle your old RAM.

Win 7 Home upgrades to Win 10 Home, and Win 7 Pro and Ultimate upgrade to Win 10 Pro.
You can not upgrade from Vista to Win 10.

Sideface: You require special low-voltage RAM for an NUC - you can NOT recycle your old RAM.

We used standard laptop ram and it worked fine.

Depends on the model, the newer NUC's are DDR3L (low voltage) and M.2 SSD (for the mSATA slot).

The 5th Gen versions are available in mSata and SSD versions - but they all require low voltage RAM.

OK I promised an update.
I took a while to save the funds so I've only had it a month with it but I ended up going all out to 'future proof' myself: i7 nuc $750 with 16gb ram $200 😁 (used the sata ssd I had in the old laptop).
Loaded it with Windows 10 pro insider but it's nagging me about being not activated now that we've passed release.
Remoting into it is pleasantly-surprisingly usable on my surface rt. I was more hopeful than expectant on this point.
Main use is running kodi and browser based netflix and premier league pass and all these perform much better than my apple tv 2! So success :)

Haven't done anything 'home server-ish' on it yet apart from being comfortable leaving it always on and a few overnight file moves to free up nas space.

An unexpected use is as a PC on my main lounge screen! So maybe using my surface RT less again now hehe. I had to look after my son working from home a couple days and hooked up a wired keyboard and wireless mouse which was so usable and comfortable on the couch that I splashed further on a logitech living room keyboard (model K830) it's pricey at $120 but rechargeable battery (that I still haven't even charged, and backlighting has me very satisfied with paying the premium.

Just have to sort out windows now. I've never paid for retail copy (just got it built with new computers previously) so procrastinating to see if I can source a license through some program/deal.
Considering power line adapters to get the best network conn to the box, but an upgrade to AC wireless is on the way, or I could have the VDSL point changed to the lounge as part of a provider switch... Just need somewhere to hide from view (and kids) the NAS and other gear hanging off the modem... :/

Probably overkill going i7. I have the lowest spec model going 24/7 (no sleep) which I got late last year It's a Celeron with 8GB Kingston RAM ($275+GST for the bare bones and the RAM) and a 512GB Seagate Hybrid OS drive I had already from a laptop upgrade to 1TB hybrid, running Win 7 Ultimate. There's 17TB of USB drives hanging off it and it's managing ~10TB of that in remote cloud storage, with a few hundred torrents going 24/7, BittorrentSyncing across half a dozen computers (remote and local) of about 100GB, serving up about a dozen network shares to deliver media to 1080p to a WDTV Live Gen 3 and couple of laptops, phones and tablet, all over a single 2.4GHz MikroTik AP - everything is on WiFi - no ethernet anywhere. Never any speed problems of a nature that are attributable to anything LAN.

Power consumption is overall equivalent to 45W continuous (actually measured for 7 days) for the NUC and external drives combined - 7% of the monthly power bill being about $8.75/mth.
