I don't really understand why they have downsized from 11GB to 8GB VRAM (though I didn't investigate the reasons either). Is there a short answer?

The RTX 2080 only had 8GB as well; the 2080TI had 11GB. Given the 3090 has 24GB, I will speculate that an unannounced 3080 Ti will have somewhere in between the two.

The new ram is much faster but also much more expensive.

Being able to refill the ram faster negates some of the need for huge amounts of it.

It’s also important to note that a lot of what you see as vram usage is actually the card filling up the memory with things it thinks it might possibly need because it has lots of unused space rather than what it is actively using, or even what it knows it will 100% need coming up next.

From tech talks from Nvidia and many devs it actually seems like even at 4K even the biggest most impressive games don’t really need more than 7 or 8gb in the real world, and even less at lower resolutions.

Ah right, yeah, I actually forgot the 80 cards had more memory and I am comparing to the 70. Doh.  The memory performance on the new cards is impressive.

Cool will be able to pickup a couple of 1080 ti's or rtx 2080 for hashcat hahahaha

Seems like most retailers/suppliers are being pretty tightlipped about pricing and stock eta's in NZ right now.

Not sure that bodes well. If it's more than I have indicated, I may skip the first pass, hard to justify that kinda money for something I use fairly occasionally.

Its a bit strange NZ retailers are not throwing us at least a "hey guys we will have some stock" bone, it may be a case of trying to dump 2000 stock, but those of us interested in 3000 series are simply not going to budge.

At this point I am holding out more hope buying a 3080  through Australia and getting family to ship over, if the price is within the expected range.

I was on reddit reading some of the comments, but I noticed even there, thier are not much posts about listings either - and that’s in the US and Europe. I’m thinking extremely low launch stock. I want a 3080, but am waiting till November, so I can trawl through all the benchmarks and reviews.

I use a UK forum as well and they are keeping pretty quiet over there too, all the guys on there are expecting to have to refresh like crazy when the product pages finally go up for orders and are all making accounts and bookmarking pages to make purchasing quicker and hopefully nab one.

Are these normal numbers? Or is this a faux launch to get out ahead of amd and the consoles or something.

The latter imo.

It's highly improbable that Nvidia will have enough stock at launch - the complicating factors of COVID on both manufacturing and shipping (not just of the final product but of components around a global supply chain) mean that certainly the founders editions will be heavily stock limited (hence all the marketing (not even rumor) about them being US only at first).

I'm only expecting meaningful stock numbers for founders cards probably early next year. It's also the first time that the founders cards aren't based on the same reference card - and once reviews hit I'm fully expecting the founders cards to be superior on cooling (at least for the card itself - blowing hot air all over your cpu, chipset and memory however...).

Third party cards will probably be a better story - we have direct channels for those at least for some manufacturers like Asus, Gigabyte and EVGA - so numbers on those cards will likely be better, earlier. It's often the case that we have good stock levels from those brands, whilst they're sold out in the US/AU.

The challenge here is that these will vary in SKU and quality as well as model so as with previous launches the top end well reviewed cards will be scarcer and the low end blower cards will be in stock.

So you take your chances - either make an early pick, be an early adopter and fight for one - or wait it out read the reviews and benches and wait till probably early next year to pick one up.

Of course then there's 'what is AMD up to' - which I'm firmly in the camp of, even if they're competitive, the vast majority of their manufacturing allocation will be going to PS5 and Xbox consoles over the next 6 months at least - so IF they have a good card - chances of them having enough stock at launch, THIS year, is highly improbable.

Samsung has enough spare capacity in the 8nm process for Nvidia, but yields may be an issue. However IMO it looks like a rushed paper launch in order to take on the consoles this holiday season.

I expect only the top end non-reference cards will be 'marginally' available, and for the 3080 and 3090 I expect stock-outs for many months for FE and low-end cards. So the only available options from NZ retailers may be a $1400 top-end 3080, or a $3000 top-end 3090.

Knowing the performance leap, AIB partners have more incentive to produce more high end cards at launch, however GPUs have gotten real expensive over the past 2 generations, and people now have tighter budgets. Those factors will both constrain supply and increase demand for the low-end cards, meaning stock-outs for many more months to come.

Edit: It looks like Mwave in Australia will be the only retailer in the ANZ region to get FE cards. If you want one you'll have to enter a raffle at the Mwave website, and have it shipped from Australia.

No mention on page of how the warranty would be handled. What a joke concept, just waiting for the memes on this one... now you have to go into the draw to give us your money get on your knees and bark like a dog ROFL.

Unlikely, TSMC are doing big ramp in production of 7nm
https://www.tsmc.com/english/dedicatedFoundry/manufacturing/gigafab.htm
7nm production is supposedly around 140K wafers a month right now, and due to be expanded soon due to expansions.

AMD are predicted to pass Apple as TSMCs largest customer in 2021

EDIT forgot to add alot of the console chips production capacity is also coming from Apple going to 5nm

Impressive numbers, as expected. Reading the graphs for each game got a bit repetitive, since it's at the bottom of every single one.

Looks like it's the sweet spot for 4k 60fps+ gaming across every title in their test suite, bar one (Control), or 120fps+ at lower resolutions. Even the thermals don't look too bad for the 300+ watts it's consuming at full noise. I'm guessing we will see more impressive cooling from AIB partner cards, but I think the FE is going to stay the prettiest.

RTX is also decent at below 4k resolutions, and can be at 4k with DLSS, which gives it a boost across the board.
