DuncanMcC:
Badboy2303: As per Bring back native Maps on Nokia Windows Phones

This didn't work for me.  What it *did* do was bring back the old Maps look.  But it still shows Nokia Maps data.

Indeed, now, when I look up a contact, I have now gone back to the Nokia Map data, even though the old Maps look is there.

So dunno if it was installing this app.  I removed it, but it made no difference.

Wanting to have up-to-date map data, I have installed "Advanced Maps Viewer" - dunno what data source it is, I think it might be Google - but at least I now have reasonably current map data.

Just FYI, gMaps/gMaps Pro is the main Google Maps app for Windows Phone. It's worth having onboard as an extra option.

If I don't want black where is the best place to buy phones online? I guess I may get stung buy customs though... Are there different versions or will they all work on all carriers?

I got my red one from https://online.axiomtelecom.com/. As far as I know, they're the only ones with unbranded, unlocked, coloured stock that are shipping them internationally at the moment. Clove did have stock but it's all sold out.

I paid NZ$854 inc shipping for mine, took 3 working days to arrive and I was lucky enough not to get stung by customs. It did have a customs value of USD$700 printed on it.

My 920 arrived today, ordered it from Clove. Got through customs without having to pay GST as well :D

So great to get a white, unbranded 920 for less than what I could've got a black, branded one from Telecom.

i am also disappointed with Lumia NFC capability.

with android, you can set the tag to turn on/off wifi bluetooth etc.. on winpho 8 you can only launch applications!

I haven't looked yet, but wouldn't the NFC functionality depend on what app you are using? Which ones have you tested?

Unfortunately the Windows phone 8 API doesn't allow much functionality when it comes to NFC

Not only do you have to accept the NFC tag, all it will do is launch the settings page where you have to manually enable/disable the setting.

In any case, it's faster to do it manually

I see the NFC functionality could be enhanced. But there are some cool things that can be done too - I see one of the NFC apps allows you to encode an address so you could tap a tag to launch Drive and start navigation to an address on the tag.

And that battery life up there is quite impressive. Mine is doing really well too.

I have just posted the first of the Nokia Lumia 920 series of posts on TelecomTech now: "A week with a Nokia Lumia 920 and Windows Phone 8".

Other posts will start flowing soon.

Got my Otterbox Commuter here. Ordered Sunday afternoon, directly on the phone itself, delivered in Wellington on Thursday. Pretty good service then.

Just a question to nakedmolerat... Are you using the screen protector? I am not so sure I will...
