Americancars: Teo (or anyone else who can answer me):

With the GPS data, when I updated the firmware, all of my maps and landmarks were lost. I thought that they were on the memory card but apparently not. I can still find some guidance instructions on the memory card, (under: Private/ 20001f63/ english/ config (this is an XML document).

Where have my maps and landmarks gone and is there anyway that I can get them back as I can't be bothered setting all of the landmarks again as that would take forever.

Thanks, Matt.

Maps and landmarks are history, you will have to download them again.

For the route planner/ directions, you have to download the directions as you go, they aren't preloaded so that is where your cost came

Are you sure about that?
I downloaded the language pack and the NZ map and then I planned a trip, Auck to Whangarei and ran it in simulation mode. There was an unspecified download and then I had voice navigation on the sym.
Then I planned a route across the South Island and did the same thing, no further download of data needed, still got the same navigation directions. All that is missing is that I cant turn the navigation on for real routes so the data is already on my memory card and they just have to switch it on somehow, maybe it checks the phone system date or something?

I'm not so sure with the new firmware. With the old firmware, every time I started a simulation, it would have to download directions but with this new firmware, it doesn't seem to download them so I'm not sure what happens now. As I posted above, I found (from my memory card back up before the firmware upgrade), I have found some stuff that seems to be old voice guidance simulation:

How did you plan a trip inside New Zealand? That would be cool as I thought that the maps weren't good enough for that.

Here is a sample of what is in that part of the memory card:

wp_maneuver>
- <wp_maneuver val="UTURN">
<wp_text val="make a uturn and continue on" />
<wp_nextstreetname />
wp_maneuver>
- <wp_maneuver val="EXT_UTURN_RIGHT">
<wp_text val="turn 2 times right into" />
<wp_nextstreetname />
wp_maneuver>
- <wp_maneuver val="EXT_UTURN_LEFT">
<wp_text val="turn 2 times left into" />
<wp_nextstreetname />
wp_maneuver>
- <wp_maneuver val="ENTER_HIGHWAY">
<ref ref="turntext" />
<wp_text val="enter highway" />
<wp_nextstreetname />
wp_maneuver>
- <wp_maneuver val="LEAVE_HIGHWAY">
<ref ref="turntext" />
<wp_text val="leave the highway" />

EDIT: I just tried doing a simulation for a route here in Auckland. Amazing, I didn't know that you could get a simulation in NZ. Cool.

When in a simulation, if you change the zoom level or move the cursor, you lose the arrow telling you where to go. Is there a way to get this back as it is really annoying having to start the navigation again and if you were to be navigating in real life, this would cause a problem?

You can start tracking which is very close to real navigation.. . .

Thank you so much. This problem has been plaguing me for a while. Smile

And as for the tracking thing, I might go and try that out in a while. It sounds cool.

NP, I am just happy to help ;)

Try it, it can be handy, of course it lacks the turn by turn voce navigation but it still very handy and useful. . ..

You might want to hold out on the software upgrade unless you REALLY need it.

The good....
The videomoda is quicker to strat/stop/pause/resume...

The bad.
I have had the camera application crash twice today needing a full reboot,

The camera application "usermode" only save flash on/off preference now, between closing the camera and restarting it, It goes back to "high sharpness" which is a real pain in the @#$ and turns out images that look bad at VGA resolution.

The "gallery" is even more sluggish than before, it's only loading precached thumbnails ands it chokes.

The menu is very sluggish to startup.

It switches between 3G and GSM modes all the time!

The GPS and maps seems to do strange things.

It corruped my memorycard when the camera applic failed needing a reformat.

web browser crashes now, especially on Geekzone.

I wonder if I can downgrade it? it was utterly perfect before I upgraded, now i'm seriously regretting it.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Don’t even think about, you’ll kill your phone completely!!!!

 Anyway, you should try to reformat or maybe even reflash the phone, I really haven’t such a problems after upgrade. . .

Did you touch the cable during the back up as I have heard that it can screw up your phone.

Maybe if you change your product code for another region (I would suggest FRANCE as it is very similar to EURO 1) and then update the firmware again, DON'T TOUCH THE CABLE (stay away from it at all cost), that may help. I'm not sure.

I hope you can do something about it as I'm really glad I did it. There are several great features/ improvements that I found came from the firmware upgrade which make the phone so much more pleasant to use.

P.s. I can't get my phone to store my WPA- PSK password. I had a small problem doing it last time, but I can't get it to do it at all this time. Can anyone help?

Thanks, Matt.

Cable problem is actually related to the phones with pop-port and definitely hasn’t anything with strong connection and miniUSB port on N95.. . .

Paradoxsm did you change the product code to enable to upgrade? I ask because today is the first time I have seen a "legitimate" firmware upgrade for the product code that most of us have here. . .

Has anyone found a way to save a route in the mapping software? Surely you dont have to re-enter them every time?
Thanks.

When you say "route", do you mean in route planner?

The last entered route should still be in there when you next open the route plannner.

I see what you mean.

I think that the only solution for this is to save the two start and finish points as landmarks, maybe save them with number before the name so they appear before the rest of the landmarks.
