freitasm: Yes. It doesn't matter what SIM you have in your device, it's the original ROM operator that dictates when the update is released.

ah, I see. It appears Black is available for "Australia" (purchased from Harvey Norman so not sure who the operator is in this case). I'll wait until I get home and connect to WiFi.

So in your case the update hasn't been released

look here http://www.nokia.com/global/support/software-update/wp8-software-update/wp8-availability-in-asia-pacific/

Lumia 1020 Country variant 3050.0000.1338.1004 Available Waiting for approval

Thanks, I misinterpreted this as being the Black update, I'm guessing it's just some app updates or something trivial.

Who "approves" if for Australia? Government agency? Nokia regional office?

Nokia submits to the mobile operator. Their folks after testing it with their network features will approve an update and tell Nokia when they can start seeding it.

I don't have an operator, my carrier is "Australia". I have a Vodafone SIM in it, but as stated earlier, the network the device is connected to is not part of the equation?

Edit: If I've interpreted Nathans post correctly I'm "Country variant"?

OK, so I've got that bit right, who approves the "Country Variant"? I'm assuming it's neither Optus nor Telstra, so who does?

Just Nokia and Microsoft.

Reasons why your variant isn't currently tested/approved depends on many reasons, which I'm not at liberty to go into sorry.

Correct, I've gone through a few versions prior to the current release.

Sadly, no matter how well tested, as soon as my podgy fingers get hold of something it tends to turn pear shape. If something can go wrong, I'm the guy that finds it, especially with my weird combinations of devices and servers.

Checked the website this morning and the 1020 "Australia" Black update is now available.
