Brent and Joel...are you guys interested in all getting together and trying to nut some of these issues out?

While somethings we may not be able to fix due to buggy software...some things may just be operator error or lack of knowledge, so for us all to get together and see what settings we all have and how we use the devices may help work some issues out...

Are you actually keeping yours Brent...I got the impression your keep it short term just for testing purposes?

POSSIBLE SOLUTION - Connectivity issues

Ok...I am now not only reading the manual, I am reading it back to front and back again....hmph.

One little change I have just made in my networking options...is the 'default network destination'...
I have my access points sorted like so:
- Priority 1: DLINK (home wifi)
- Priority 2: VF NZ Internet

The theroy was, that the device should always connect to priority 1 first, my home wifi, and then when out of range, should then connect to priority 2, VF NZ Internet....

My problem has been, when leaving home, the Home Screen widgets which use internet data, have not been connecting to priority 2, VF...it just keeps throwing up and error, 'No WLAN'

What I have just noticed, is there is also a 'default' network destination...and it was set to DLINK...
So I am wondering if the Home Screen widgets would only connect to the default...

So to change my default I did the following (if anyone is wondering and wants to try to see if it makes a difference)
1) Select 'Destinations'
2) Up the top of the screen, the current 'Default' will be displayed
3) Select 'Options'
4) Select 'Default connection'
5) Select 'Internet'

So I am guessing, that makes my default any 'Internet' connection (dependant on the priority list), as opposed to using WAP for internet...

And I am guessing, that what I had previously set, 'DLINK' as the default, meant my internet connection was only connecting with my home wifi DLINK (unless I choose another AP when browsing or using other apps)

By removing that DLINK selection, and making my 'Default' just internet, I am guessing the priority lis will now kick in like it is meant to...

To select a particular Internet Access Point to be my default, I would have to gone further, and done the following after the first 5 steps:
6) Select 'Options' again
7) Select 'Select access point'
8) Select 'DLINK'

So...

I am hoping I have found the answer to my connection problems.
I will find out tomorrow when I go out...see if my internet connection kicks over according to my priority list.

Anyone else have the same problem, or tried something simular?

hey everytime i want to browse the net it automatically goes to using the vf gateway! is there i]]any way i can change it to ask on connection?

Yes there is.

Web> Options> Settings> General> Access Point > Ask when needed.

I don't have any of the issues you're having, but can sit down at some point and nut them out for you.

I don't have any of the issues you're having, but can sit down at some point and nut them out for you.

That offers me hope...that your not having these issues...so I am hoping my problems are just 'operator error'...although, the regular software crashes are not me...

Can you tell me how you currently have all your network/internet settings set?

Today, I have had a really interesting day, trying to figure this out...

I was in town, and keeped getting 'DLINK not available' error...
The only apps that keep requesting DLINK is the Home Screen - Facebook and the weather widgets, as far as I can tell...
This was even though I had set in Destinations, my 'Default' to 'Internet', and had set VF NZ Internet as 'Priority 1'...

So I tried changing my 'Default' destination to a specific AP, 'VF NZ Internet'.....
That did nothing, I still recieved the 'DLINK not available' error...

So I deleted DLINK from the list of AP's to remove it from the equation...
I then tried the Home Page widgets for connectivity...
The weather app just did nothing, and the Facebook app crashed, as it does evertime there is no internet connection...

So I have purposely done a couple reboots, I actually had to twice due to apps crashing and the phone completly locking up, required removing the battery...

Now, on my most recent reboot, and giving the phone time to do its thing, load and try to connect...I have just had a popup asking me 'internet connectivity required, set VF NZ Internet to 'connect automatically''....
It seems having deleted the DLINK AP has forced up that option box...
Having selected 'VF NZ Internet' That seems to have finally got all the Home Screen widgets using VF for connectiivity, rather than my DLINK...progress....

But what I do notice in that popup...is setting it to 'connect automatcially...does this mean, as wih the DLINK connection, the Home Screen will connect to VF and nothing else?

I am thinking maybe this is the difference in my settings as opposed to some of you...
I would have set DLINK to connect automatically when I first got the phone, and connected...
And it seems that seting is nowhere to be found, to be edited...
It only shows when it has not been set (on first use, or after deleting the previous AP)

Sooooo.......

Now I will connect to my home wifi (DLINK) again, and will test the following:
- Turn mobile on and off, see which connection it uses for Home Screen
- If VF, will then change my default to 'Internet', and my 'Priority list' to put DLINK first and reboot and test which conection is used first again (hopefully DLINK)
- Will then go out of range of my home wifi (DLINK), and test again, to see if it uses the VF NZ Internet AP to connect the Home Screen apps automatically, or if it requires a prompt...or if it connects at all

If it does all that, then yeeha!

If it does not, I will report back...I want to sort this out.

Yer mate, would be keen as there is more than one way to skin a cat.

One thing i have concluded is that this phone is not very driver friendly.. requires alot of attention to start a call when driving.

I havent really come across the connection issues yet, but will test that out over the next few days.

Ok....my latest progress...and it is progress...

Having deleted my DLINK AP, it forced the OS to popup the 'internet connectivity required, set VF NZ Internet to connect automatically'...

From that popup, I selected VF NZ Internet...

Now, the Home Screen widgets connect using VF....which is good...

So I next connected to my home wifi again (DLINK)
And I purposely rebooted to see what would happen...
The Home Screen still connected using VF....which was good...

So I next changed my priority list...to put DLINK as priority 1, and VF as priority 2....and rebooted...
And apon reboot, the device found my home wifi network, connected automatically, and the Home Screen used that wifi for its data....so that good...

I then tested it to see if it would automacially fall back to VF once out of range of my home wifi...
Walked up the driveway, lost my wifi, and then it automatically connected via VF....awesome!

Only the last test has it failed....
I then walked back down my driveway, back within my home wifi range...
The device found the wifi network....but did not reconnect automatcially.
Bugga.
Almost perfect.

I can disconnect my VF connection, and connect to my DLINK home wifi....but I want to see it all happen automatically....

But at least I think I have it mostly all working properly now....I think.

What a mish.

All because of that one setting at the very start....'connect automatcially to DLINK'....that over-rode all other settings, and could not be edited until I deleted the DLINK AP to get that setting popup to appear again.

Hey Brent....
I think I got it mostly sussed now, but can you answer this;

The mobile connects to the home wifi on bootup...
It automatcially connects to VF once out of range of the home wifi...
But it does not appear to automacially connect back to the home wifi, and drop the VF connection, once back in range of the home wifi?

Do yoy know if it can do this automacially, and if so, how?
I would like it to handle all these network changes automatcially...
wifi - VF -wifi VF - wifi.....etc etc...without any need to prompt or disconnect one manually and connect the other.

Good question, it seems to be that the Facebook and Accuweather widget don't have any way of altering the connection type once you have multiple to choose from.

The web works fine with the various connection methods and alters modes as needed.

The Destinations application works flawlessly in the fact that it connects as told, its just unfortunate that the two widgets I use the most don't want to integrate with the Destination application.

I am experiencing the same TheBartender - it just won't automatically connect to home wifi from Vodafone data.

I took a few photos indoors tonight and they turned out quite washedout until I adjusted the ISO to "Medium". Hmm, never had to do this on my N95 to get quality indoor shots. How about you guys?

Can you guys confirm what video files are compatible with the N97? Thanks.

Yup. Exactly.

A couple issues that Nokia or their partners need to sort...
1) Apps that connect to the net need to have their own editable connection settings
2) The Home Screen needs to have its own editable connection settings, easily found somewhere in the Connectivity settings section.

I am currently testing out HandyWi...

While the N97 has a built in wifi scanner, it does not connect automatically to open networks...it just displays an antenna in the top right corner when a wifi network is available...

Strangely, the N97's current built in settings, mean when you turn on your mobile, it will connect to your home wifi automatically (provided its your first priority and your within range), and then when you go out of range, it will connect to VF automatically...but unfortunatley, shoud you come back into range of your home wifi (or any open wifi network), it will not connect automatically again....meaning a manual disconnection from VF and connection to the wifi network is required...

This is where HandyWi comes in.

HandyWi can be set to scan for wifi networks automatically and connect automatically, with no input required.

It automates the whole process of changing between networks, wifi and 3G, back and forth.

And it can be set to run as a background process, which starts on bootup.

Does it work?

Well....I have not yet fully tested, bu I can confirm it is automatically reconnecting me to my wifi nework everytime I got out and then back wthin range...which is good...tha is doing already what the N97 currently does not.

But I have not yet got it to fall back to VF 3G when out of range of any open wifi network...as its meant to...
I need to play wih the settings and test some more...will report back.
