Hey there.

I've been following the forums here for several weeks, but this is the first time I've posted.

Just received my brand new Nokia n97 yesterday. First impressions are that it's an awesome machine, however need more time to really suss it out propoerly : )

I've encountered a bit of an issue and I'm wondering if anyone could help me with it...

By checking the product code behind the battery, I've worked out that the phone is a Malaysian version of the n97 (Vodafone version, 900mhz or whatever it is).

The phone is an english keyboard version with no chinese characters on it or anything, however, I'm having some issues typing with it. Specifically, the blue symbols on the QWERTY keypad (accessed by the Function Key) don't match up with what I type. For example when I press FUNCTION=>L (which should give me the : symbol) I get an asterix (*). When I try to type some of the symbols further down the keypad (for example D) I get some asian characters appearing, dunno which language :)

The normal letters work fine, and all the numbers work properly as well (which are also accessed by the function key)

It's as if the keypad is english, but it's mapped to be a semi asian one...

Any ideas how I can solve this problem? I've done a bit of reading online about changing the product code of the phone, and I'm wondering if that would provide a solution. (I'm also wondering if talking about that is a breach of the Forum Usage Guideline, and will get me kicked off here :)

Anyway I think I've ranted enough. Any suggestions or solutions would be much appreciated.

From who did you purchase your N97?

And what version firmware are you running...maybe updating to v11 will help...easiest done by using the Nokia Software Updater (NSU)...part of the included PC software Ovi Suite

Guys,

New to this forum, had the N97 a week and pretty pleased with it, been using the firm's iPAQ 914 up to now but took the opportunity to get the N97 for £100 with the wife's contract due an upgrade. So I've moved back to Symbian from Windows (nice).

My main bug bears are the priority list re connectivity, currently got them set to:

Destinations>Internet>Home Wifi (pri 1), Contract Internet (pri 2), Boingo (pri 3)

I seem to be seeing similar issues to TheBartender in that if I'm away from home it still tries to connect to the home w-fi then times out (this isn't only Accuweather or Facebook) but also BBC iPlayer which is a UK app from the BBC which allows you to download TV programs.

Bartender - can you confirm which settings you are now using as I'd like to replicate them as it sounds like you've got it about as good as we're going to get it!

My second issue is around connection to the Nokia Ovi Suite (I'm on version 2.0 Beta v0.7.4.0) - while this will connect fine when I initially connect via USB (Phone Suite) and synch okay (apart from any Music which it fails to Synch) as soon as I disconnect from the USB it won't reconnect when I reconnect the USB, I have to re-boot the PC to get it to reconnect and this is a right pain as you can imagine.

Any help much appreciated here.

I have noticed a bug - the alarm goes off 3-4 minutes after the set time. Has anyone noticed this?

Not a firmware issue, it's running on the latest firmware as far as I can tell: v11.0.021

Like I said, I'm wondering about the language settings though...

What language set do people have their phone set to? (found under Settings=>Phone=>Phone Management=>Device Updates)

Mine is running on Language Set 22
Custom Firmware: 11.0.021.C01.01

How does that compare to other people's settings?

You may have done what I intially did....set your home wifi to 'connect automatically'...this is where all my connection issues stemed from...

Some apps dont have editable connection settings, although they connect to the net...that is pain that can cause issues...

Those apps, use the 'default' connection that you set to connect automatically...
This setting cannot be found anywhere in the Connectivity settings.
It is only offered to edit, when no AP has been set, and pops up on the Home Screen after booting the device...

You have likely when you first got the device, connected to your home network, that popup has showen, and naturally you choose your home wifi to 'connect automatically'

So.....

To be able to edit it again, do the following:
- Delete you home wifi AP (you can always re-ad it later)
- Reboot
- Give the device time to load and search for connecion....
- The message will popup 'you need connectivity, set **** to connect to the internet automatically'
- Select you phone network to connect automatically
- Done.

What this does...is say to the device, connect to your mobile network...but your priority list in Desinations will have preference (to a limited extent), and it will connect wifi if possible first...otherwise, when you go out of range of your home wifi, it will then 'automatically connect' to you mobile network provider for internet data.

Hope that helps.

Ugh.

I am now getting a regular error, everytime when I reboot, that says 'Reinstall application'...
Dodge!

Having read many other people errors and expereinces, and what they have done...I am likely to do the following:
- A hard reset, start afresh
- Install all apps and widgets on the mass media drive...NOT the phone memory.

The hard set is I want to start clean...
And supposevly installing apps on the phone memory slows it down...so reports are its better to install on the mass media drive, device responds faster (according to those who have done this)

haha, i see you have meet Mr Symbian...

Most, if not all symbian phones i have owned come up with heaps of errors if the phones system storage memory gets critical

I think its a flaw in the symbian os design. They should make it dummy proof.

The n81 i have has got to a point that even a fresh build/start still brings up errors saying no system memory unless a memory card is present.

I dont think my memory is critical yet....just I read its better to instal apps on the mass storage drive rather than the phone memory...the device runs faster, less crashing etc....so I am willing to test that theroy out.

As for the error message, I think I only have myself to blame for that one....installing, uninstalling apps.
I think its related to HandyWi....just uninstalled that...yet its AP's wont disapeer.

Something I am coming to appreciate...is paying for quality apps....at only a couple bucks each, its worth the investment for reliable, sta

Hi

New user at Geekzone - but i've had my N97 for 2 days so far - apart from some problems below... quite like it! Came from using a E90 which now just looks so old beside this one!

First thing I did was update to the new firmware so can't comment on the relative differences in firmwares, but I've had no trouble with it swapping between wireless at home and vodafone while out and about. Haven't got around to loading any other wireless networks (friends, clients etc) onto it to see how it copes with swapping between those yet. Of course the only widget/app on my front screen that uses connectivity is MFE.

Problems I've found:
Bluetooth - connected it to my carkit (Nokia CK-7W) and set it to authorised.... and it never connects, I have to manually force the connection each time.
Photo's - took one of the cat this morning to try out the camera, tried to add a new tag through the interface, each time i click on "New Tag" it takes me back to the Photos "home" screen. I can create albums and shift things around there, but can't seem to add any tags.
GPS - Updated to Ovi Maps v3 - several times while trying to get it to calculate a route the phone crashes...
Random crashes - most of mine seem to come when I have it plugged into the laptop via USB and trying to use it at the same time. = phone crash, most times comes straight back up again, although have had to remove battery a couple of times...

And finally - a frustration - I'm am positive that while I first setting up the device I found an option that asked me if I wanted to see a new mail message ("You have new email"), I set this to yes, but now really want it off - i can see in the widgets if i have new email (MFE) and thats more than enough, but I'm stuffed if I can find the option to turn it off! Anyone found that option anywhere?

Mine is the same Custom Firmware but Language Set 20. My only 2 language selections were English and Philipino... (and its on English).

The CK-7W and N97 aren't compatible as per the link below.

The CK-100 and CK-300 however both are.

You can turn of that new email pop up by following the steps below.

Menu> Applications> MfE> Mail for Exchange> Options> Edit Profile> Email> Show New Mail pop up> No

Guys,

Looking for some further input as I think I may have a problem with the phone.

I've tried installing both version 1 and 2 of ovi suite and I still have the issue. The problem I have is that when I boot my pc and connect the USB it links to the phone no probs (using connection type PC suite) but if I disconnect the USB and subsequently try to reconnect it, the PC can't see it. I've now tried it on 2 PCs, with the same problem.

Not only is this a pain but it's stopping me from upgrading the f/w as half way through the u/g it losses connection and then there's no way to get it back short of re-booting the PC.

Any ideas, could it be a phone h/w problem.
