Took both my 920 and 1020 out for some comparison shots for YouTube and the silly 1020 didn't focus for the first few shots that mattered... sheesh. I'll have to do it again tomorrow.

My unboxing commentary:

I was going to do the next vid yesterday but I might be taking the phone back because I haven't been entirely satisfied with the results thus far. I did warn them in the shop that I would be bringing it back if it gave me a certain type of problem, and it does seem to be doing so.

Trouble is they might not have another black one there as a replacement and even if they do, it could be the same or worse.

Overall the image quality is clearly a significant step up from the 920 and other cameras, but only where it is actually sharp, and that's not everywhere it should be.

Other than the image quality I've been seeing spontaneous restarts.. sort of like the 920 had back at the beginning. Surprised to see it happening here again given that it should be 99.9% the same as the 920 by now.

I'll go into it in detail in the next vid.

It'll be a great phone if you appreciate the whole WP UI (I do) and are happy to put up with the app situation (I am), and understand the 'this is not a pocket computer' philosophy of WP (fine by me after owning PPC, WM and Android devices that were).

However I had an image quality issue with my 920 that I put up with, but won't put up with on the 1020 because this is meant to be the good one.

Not including the corners, which I fully expect to have plenty of aberrations, the rest of the image should be consistently sharp in a controlled test shoot, and it isn't. About 70% of the image is good, but the left third of the frame is extremely so-so and not really up to scratch.

I'll get some more test images tomorrow and then decide.

WP8 on mine has been rock solid so far - spontaneous restarts sound like a bad handset.

I've been impressed with photos so far - been letting auto do its thing, planning to play around with manual settings some more.

Taking city shots in sunlight, then reframing around small or specific parts of buildings is pretty amazing.
