Flickky: It'd be awesome if you could list the say, last five console games that you were interested in, so we can get an understanding for the type of gamer you are.

My preference has always been Playstation over Xbox - bit of personal preference mixed in with the fact that it's mainly a gaming console with decent entertainment apps (Lightbox, Netflix, etc).

The only ones I have played are Halo, Skyrim. Fallout seemed fun and I have Call of Duty 4 on my iMac which I quite enjoy.

I'm rubbish at car driving games, usually proficient at first person shooters due to being a good shot IRL, can usually do ok in flight sims and similar games.

Don't really know any actual games - I am 48 and have no kids, so nothing like that around my environment generally!

I'd say both are capable. Controllers are quite a difference, to you and the OP I'd go try and see which CONTROLLER you prefer.

Kinect games are cool but generally a novelty for most people, I wouldn't buy a console for that.

PS4 gets better frame rates from my reading.

networkn: Having owned both for 2 generations I can tell you there is no comparison from my perpsective, my PS4 is used several times a week and my xbox gets used once every few months if I want to play an exclusive title. The Kinect in the Xbox1 is fantastic.

If I could only have one, it wouldn't even be a consideration, it would be Playstation every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

If the TV features of the Xbox would get to NZ that would sway me ever so slightly, but given I have mysky I am unsure how much I'd use it.

I'm the same from my limited experience.
Certain things bug me about the PS3 though, in that it's seriously tied down. You can't network into it and arrange your music collection into folder etc. That yanked my crank after copying a bunch of music files on there and then finding out half were rubbish. You're left having to use the PS3 interface and controller to sort it all out.

PlayTV sounded promising but as NZ doesn't offer the EIT data for terrestrial the awesome EPG's never worked properly here.
Same deal with windows media centre and the Xbox one, so freeviews choice there stuffed us all in that respect.

I wish the Playstation had an IR port etc but fundamentally it's been very good to me. It's been our Blu-ray player and now youtube channel for our non smart TV for years, and continues to get support now many many years into it's lifespan. Spotify is now on there also.

One day someone might release something that does what you need a mini PC to achieve. The new PS4 seems very grunty, but it's selling feature set is far more games orientated than I'd need, so I'm kinda struggling to see a need to upgrade. And with no ability to switch on with the harmony, it's just not going to gel nicely with my intended setup.

Just wanted to weigh in here - I recently got the PS4.

I think at the end, it depends on what sort of games you play (and if you play games). I prefer the PS4 exclusives (Last of us, uncharted etc) and therefore I went with the PS4.

XBox actually is nice as well, but I am not into any of its exclusives. If you wanted the console more for a media machine than a gaming machine, go with XBOX - especially with its integration with the PC environment, it would make a lot of things work seamlessly I guess.

Some Harmony remotes have support for Playstation. I am really impressed with my PS4. Graphics in games and especially sound, are incomparable :)

I bought Plex (Best bit of software I own almost). I don't do any management on my PS4 or PS3, everything is done on my PC.

I bought Plex (Best bit of software I own almost). I don't do any management on my PS4 or PS3, everything is done on my PC.

As I understand it, the Harmony remotes will work with the PS4 basically as they did with PS3 (i.e. via adapter/hub) BUT, as Jaxson says, no remote is able to power on the PS4 from standby. You have to use your controller to do that.

I don't think there's such a thing as a platform-exclusive sports game. They're mostly done by EA (Fifa, Rugby) who make it available on every platform they possibly can.

Racing games = Xbox One & Forza, or PS3 and Gran Turismo. (PS4 has The Club and Driveclub, but they're both pretty average).

Fighting games are all multi-platform as well.

If you are interested in fallout 3 then Xbox has backwards compatibility (incoming feature before year end) with Xbox 360 games (approx. 100 by end of year). Fallout 3 is slated to be one of those as it comes bundled with pre-orders of Fallout 4.

As for systems themselves - UI on Xbox is changing this year so if that is a reason to not get it then its a no issue. I personally can't stand the PS UI but that is personal preference.

The real question is what exclusive games do you play and what systems do your friends have. The systems themselves are largely comparable with much the same features and abilities. If much prefer the Xbox exclusives myself (Halo, Gears of War, Forza) with only really Uncharted drawing my bow on PS. Xbox does have the added advantage of being more closely aligned to Windows 10 with universal apps and game streaming to Windows 10 devices and suchlike. I also understand its a better media management device but haven't delved to far into this yet (its on the TO DO list).

Xbox does have EA Access which is a fabulous service that effectively rents you access to a bunch of EA games for $40 per year while giving 10% discount to digital purchases and early access (5 days before I think) to games for a limited time (six hours normally). Pretty slick service and now includes all the main EA sporting staples.

If you like first person shooters then Xbox probably a better bet as you have zero decent exclusives on PS4 and Halo and Gears on XBox. Buying an Xbox now gets you the Halo Master Chief Collection which is Halo1, 2, 3, 4 and multiplayer parts in one slick bundle (slick now....wasn't so slick at launch!). Can also buy Halo ODST for pretty cheap and Halo 4 coming in Christmas......thats alot of Halo!

Oh and Kinect is cool. Not for gaming as much but certainly sweet for voice commands and suchlike. And if you like Dancing games.....

Ditto! I have Plex Media Server with PlexConnect serving 3 AppleTVs and PS4 and few other devices floating arounds. So, not too worry if PS4 can't play media directly off USB.
