Thanks will have a go at overclocking and getting a 970gtx and some more ram :)

Umm you can do that, but the fans will still blast.

Was hoping a later model graphics card wouldnt need to blast as much? The 6970 was running at 90 deg c

I have a GTX970, it runs quite cool, only gets up to ~75-80 after an extended gaming session. Fans turn off when not gaming or only doing light duty as well.

Actually up until a boxing day upgrade, I was running an i5 2500k, 8gb RAM and the GTX970, if my 2500k hadn't started to exhibit signs of failure I would still be running it. Overclocked to 4.2ghz it handled everything I threw at it without issue. Only really CPU intensive games were starting to show any signs of bottlenecking.

some will be able to handle the game better than others and not get anywhere near as hot, and hence not need to run the fan at full speed

Ok I thought a AMD x970 series was very powerful vs a GTX x60 series

Turns out I was a bit off the mark, the 6970 benchmarks very low comparatively ... !

+1 for upgrade GPU +/- RAM

I usually refer to these hierarchy tables for CPU and GPU

I thought in AMD the second digit denotes how good it is and the second last digit denotes how supreme the good one is?

Eg a 4970 is or rather should be better than a 7530

well considering a GTX 960 or GTX 970 is Nvidia that doesn't work, i have no idea how AMD run things

the first digit is the series of card, the second is bascially the spec of it, 950 being the lowest/cheapest and 980 being the highest/most expensive

either way the GTX970 is a much better card than the 6970, and im sure it wont run anywhere near as hot or as noisy

In nvidia remove the 0 at the end.

Eg 585 should be more powerful than a 760. Is it?

no nvidia dont remove anything there has never been any numbers on the end nor any way to correlate to AMD

just because a card is a different series doesnt mean one from the previous series wont be better than it, as you have shown the cheaper cards ie the GTX 950 etc will more than likely be beaten by a GTX780.

The GTX 970 is currently one of the best performance per $$ cards out there

the

Asus GeForce GTX 970 Strix DirectCU II OC HDMI DP 2xDVI 4GB is $568 from mighty ape

or the

Gigabyte Radeon R9 390 G1 Gaming HDMI 3xDP 8GB is $553 from Alpha City

extra 4GB of Vram for $15 buck less I'd go with the R9-390 and an extra 4GB of ram for your system

Computer Lounge have a 10% off sale this weekend, use copuon code "CLSUMASALE"

http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=23062

There are very few games that will max out 4gb of vram at 1080p or even at 1440p, and at 4k the GPU will be the bottleneck on cards like the R9 390

Hey guys, Got a 970GTX and 16gb of ram from Playtech. It is running awesome. Play rust at 1080p full settings and around 60fps average. Loving it.

No significant fan noise!!
