+1 for the Fable series as a suitable alternative. It's a lot of fun and has a similar gameplay mechanic, but the story is a bit less dark and the visual style a little less realistic.

There's also Oblivion, which is less realistic due to the system constraints of the time.

If he's anything like 10 year old me, he'll install it in an unobvious place and play it when you're not looking.

Theres definately worse things out there for 10 year olds, its not particularly gorey, and does present an interesting array of morality choices.

Obviously, you know your 10 year old better than we do, and are the best judge of how mature he is and what he can cope with.

However, if I cast my mind back into the dim distant past when I was about that age, then your statement that he is keen on it and "some of his friends are playing it [...]" probably means that you have lost already if you don't want him playing it. If I was in his shoes I would probably just play it at my friends where their parents were either out or less fussy (which is more or less how I first saw Playboy, and at about that age too

).

I used to get into trouble at that age, because I was a very precocious reader, and I loathed censorship and being told I wasn't old enough to read/cope with a book. I used to, on principle, refuse to read an assigned book at school if it said abridged, and get into constant arguments with the librarian who didn't want to issue me adult themed books that were "too hard for me", and kept insisting that I should read from the "kids" section. In the end, Mum used to get the books I wanted out on her card - problem solved. She just used to make sure I understood what I was reading, and explain stuff to me, which was the best response. I admit that at about 10-11 the photos in the Scourge of the Swastika disconcerted me a bit (hey, like all boys that age I was into war stuff), but otherwise no damage done.

So, back on topic, if you don't get it then it's highly likely he will play it anyway. you need to factor that into your strategy.

my son learnt to read by playing RPG's on the PS 1, he wanted to follow the story so at 6-7 he taught himself to read the dialogue , and now at 20 , he reads every fantasy book he can find and enjoys books more than games.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

My oldest taught himself to read before he went to school so he could read Xbox controls and game dialogs. I had an argument with his year three teacher who said he should focus less on Halo. I asked her to show me one other student in her class who read as widely and deeply about any narrative. She couldn't.

I appreciate the sentiment, but this kid already reads a lot more, a lot faster, than I do. He decided in the weekend to write a sci-fi novel (with a pretty cool preimse actually) and already has 2500 words.

His screen time is limited to 30-60mins a day, so I don't feel like he's over-doing it by any means.

You should definitely keep an eye on his participation on Internet writers forums :-) If he's serious I work with a couple of published SciFi authors and can probably find out some safer resources.

Skyrim isn't too bad, however it is really up to what you think. Personally I would think 10 is a bit too young, but it depends on the child.
I would probably think Fable is worse than Skyrim, it has sex in it. And we all know that is much more traumatic than violence.
