I also find Golem hard to fight with because their fast moves are slow and they don't dodge well. I'll probably keep a couple in the tank for certain raids, but I much prefer using other things. I've been fortunate to catch quite a few very high CP Magikarp so I've got some decent Gyarados that I find are pretty good generalists. My son and I just took down a Focus Blast Alakazam with mainly Gyarados and Dragonites. Our first attempt with Tyranitars and Houndooms (recommended) failed because we ran out of time.

I'll end the event 1.1 million XP into Level 39, having started the event around 1.75 million XP into Level 38
Maths = 2.35 million XP gained

I spent too much on incubators/lucky eggs and those great boxes, and also used 2000 coins of stored funds I had in there.

Did another Lugia raid after work on a silver gym - got 8 balls, all 8 hit and all 8 failed again
The depression for not capturing is starting to wear me down :-)

I must admit I've felt quite discouraged with my low catch rate. But I guess they're not supposed to be easy. I'm just glad my son has a decent number of each because otherwise there would be no end of tears. I was really anxious when legendaries came out that he'd get too upset if they fled, but he dealt well with the first one running and then he caught his second and third, and had one of each by the time he'd done three raids (whereas I was still empty-handed).

Out of interest, what level is your son?

I've seen multiple reports that either low level and/or child accounts are able to get Legendaries easier than the rest of us ..

Event is over as of 12.50pm. Very nice while it lasted and as a small bonus, any eggs that were incubating with the reduced rate, stay incubating at the reduced rate (at this visually, I can confirm this in 300m)

He's level 31 at the moment. I have also seen that discussion about age and whether the youngsters get a better catch rate. Someone at one of our raids mentioned they were at Silo Park in town and all the kids were catching their legendaries and the parents weren't. Maybe there's something in it!

Oh, I am glad I popped that 10km egg in just before the event ended. I haven't had one in ages and I bought an extra incubator to get it on while the bonuses were still running.

After the opposite happened at the start with eggs already in remained at their usual distance, I gambled on the same happening at the end and stuck in two 10km eggs. Good call apparently. :-)

Productive event with double everything. Finally hit L35. Powered up my top pokemon. Plenty of candy all round.
Now to restock everything I burned through during the event.

Lugia is starting to frustrate me; still haven't managed to capture one after 8 attempts (one of those was at a gold badge gym I had Pokemon in), but have managed to get 4 Articunos (from about 15 attempts) - most people locally seemed to be going after Articuno raids because of his limited availability (though I am highly doubtful it will be too limited and they will all make appearances later on)

Otherwise it is back to pressing the button when the Go Plus tells me to and not worrying if I capture the Pokemon or not (and at the moment, not seems to be winning)

One annoyance is that GPS has decided to position me about 2 meters away from the work PokeStop as of Friday so I am struggling to fill up my bag. It will come right eventually .. probably something to do with orbits that I dont understand.

GPS can be frustrating. Some days I can reliably drift to the stop in my street and others I can't get anywhere near it. I'm sure it has to do with whichever satellite is overhead and the atmospheric conditions at the time.

I had an epic day legendary raiding yesterday, and I think it's because I stopped caring so much. I was happy with my existing catches, and was mainly accompanying my sister and son to help them get their totals up (not that my son needs it!). As a result, I was much more relaxed and I think it helped my throwing technique. Either that or it was just dumb luck (could very well be the latter). We did six raids in three and a half hours, and I caught five of them. Nobody was more shocked than me.

I'm trying to take the day off today because I am exhausted, but my son wants to try for one more after school, so we'll see. I'm starting to wonder what I'll do with 8 Articuno, but I suppose the lower level ones will be good to trade when that comes out. Thankfully Wednesday is early closing for school (parent/teacher interviews) so we can fit in a few extra raids and hopefully grab Moltres early on to prevent panic and tears later.

I really hope after the birds they give us a break and release Gen 3 next for a bit of variety, before letting the dogs out in Q4. I'd like to have the chance to do some warm-weather legendary raids.

I'm not catching any legendaries because I can't be bothered with trying to fit in with other players to arrange raids, I prefer to just play alone.

When trading comes in I'll get one of each from my friends just so I can complete my available pokedex.

I need to prepare some of my Pokemon for Moltres, including powering up some of my water based Pokemon including Vaporeon and Gyarados as well as some rock move Golem's

One of my other planning tasks is to decide how I spend my accumulation of fast and charged TMs - I have used one of each to change an Iron Tail/Fire Blast Tyranitar to Bite/Crunch, but now have 11 of each to use up

Well done MurrayM for not "buying" into the hype!

I feel well-placed for Moltres. I have the Golems and Tyranitars I powered up for the original legendaries, plus a couple each of powerful Vaporeon and Gyarados. I've also got a huge Omastar with Water Gun and Rock Blast. Not as good as the double rock legacy moveset but still very decent. I love Gyarados as a general attacker, and thanks to some high-cp Magikarp evolutions I've got a few very big ones. Considering I was never much of a battler, the recent changes in the game have been quite an experience for me.

Last night I worked out what Pokemon could get an advantage by using either a fast or TM (maybe both) and then picked the best and changed a bunch of moves; actually ended up getting the replacement move I wanted in all the cases and still have around 8 of each for later on.

I then took ~320k worth of stardust and powered up 2x Golem, 2x Gyarados and a Vaporeon to level 35; I have enough stardust to power up two more Pokemon (for those I have the candy for) and am struggling with another Vaporeon, a Dragonite (out of two choices) and a Lapras ..

Has anyone noticed that Pokemon spawns seem to have been decreased below normal levels since the ending of the event?
Maybe I just got too used to the event spawn increase that the normal amount seems low.

Shame that the drizzle arrived in Dunedin around the time Moltres did ..

I've seen some recommendations for Moltres and Zapdos counters which are based on simulations of level 30 pokemons. Do you think that they should be taken up to level 35? That would be almost twice as much extra candy, not to mention severe depletion in stardust.

If you have the numbers in the raid, would level 35 make a significant difference? So far, it seems that extra balls for the team contribution matters more.

Raid with 10 x L33 and above players decimated a Moltres in the first 100 seconds. Couldn't tell you what everyone else was using, but mine are a mix of L30 and L35 Mons.
But I'm guessing that unless you have only 2 or 3 in the group attempting it, then you could safely assume that you'll have an easy takedown.

Catch rate seems easier for Moltres than Lugia. Caught mine on 5th ball of 8 in the first raid I did.

The stronger they are, the longer they survive. L35 might help you raid with fewer people, but unless you've got stardust to burn, L30 is adequate. Moltres is easy to battle anyway - my sister, my son and I came extremely close with just the three of us yesterday (as an experiment) and we were using a combo of Pokemon that were around L30.

I'm not sure spawn rates have dropped - all the points in my street are firing at the usual times - but the quality seems worse. Probably just imagining it after such an exciting week, but boy there are a lot of Spearow around, lol.

I did three Moltres raids yesterday. My first ran but I got the other two. A lot of people in our second group caught it. I'm glad I didn't watch any of the YouTuber's videos first, because all the guys I watch had a terrible time hitting Moltres, and that would have made me nervous. I think I landed every ball, although some of them weren't fantastic throws. A lot of people are using the trick where you hold your finger on the pokeball until the circle gets to where you want it, then take your finger away, and the circle will stay the same until you re-engage and start spinning. If you do that during the attack animation (when the circle doesn't show or change size) and release the ball just as the animation is ending, you hit the Pokemon with the circle size you pre-determined. I haven't tried it because I'm too scared of accidentally deploying my ball.
