This still does not seem like a network issue. If Telecom were dropping ACKS, why would they not drop ACKS from me when I am calling other, non "08xx" numbers?

You should at least try it - perhaps fix the issue maverick is pointing out?

I just tried direct.telecom.co.nz, as the APN, both on the router and directly on the MAC.

A call to 082210 is drop after 4-6 seconds.

The issue you are experiecing has been discussed on here in the past and is a known XT issue. As Maverick says it's an issue with XT with calls that are answered immediately. Signalling is lost which casues the SIP timer to expire and drop the call.

Although it also does happens with 08xx number that ring for a bit.

It's the 08 ness which is the deciding factor

No it's not, voicemail answers straight away even if you heard ringing, remember you also dialed 9503000, same issue. The explanation I have given you is the the issue, on this I will bet my reputation( lousy as it is :) )

I just switched my cellphone off, and called it. It kicked straight into voicemail, and then disconnected after 4 seconds.

To satisfy my curiosity - why would a network-layer issue affect essentially an application layer function? SIP messages are just ASCII message over UDP port 5060, right?

In order for Telecom XT to throw away the client ACK messages, and faithfully deliver others, that would mean that Telecom is doing some deep packet inspection on the SIP protocol dialogue. Which frankly is very naughty and rude.

I suppose my question is, what exactly is the XT network doing?

There are various reasons why such things can occur, including packet loss during WCDMA state transitions which seems to be the likely cause of this issue.

I did some testing last year when this same issue was raised on here and found this to be the likely cause of the issue as the phone moved from idling in 3G to HSDPA mode. If the call is answered after a period of ringing the transition to HSDPA has already typically occured, no packet loss happens, and the call connects succesfully. Make a call that is answered immediately and some UDP packet loss seems to exist during this state transition. No TCP packet loss seems to occur during these transitions as the packets are presumably being resent.

Maybe we should start a new thread "Telecom fix your XT network" - reason for this is in light of the rural broadband initiative. With Telecom / Vodafone looking to play a key role in this, don't you think any network that can be used for supplying rural broadband SHOULD support VoIP?

No we havn't as yet, VOIP is not supported and activly frowned upon over the Cellular network I believe haven't checked their terms and conditions in a while, it is definatley an issue I'm sure the Telcom engineers will be interested in as it does show an underlying issue with the working of the XT modems / network that is highlighted by this fault, it mayhave an impact on other types of services.

If anyone from XT reads this and wants to know more or even a test account to see the issue, feel free to drop me a line ..

Yes, I believe this is the case still, but I think this is something that now needs to change, especially if their mobile network has a part to play in the government subsidised RBI.
