Per the title, I've got around 10-15gb of new steam games to download but that can quickly get expensive. Here the occasional rumour that Xnet has a local mirror, is there any truth to this?

If you have friends with the games, they can back up their copies, and then you install from their back ups.

But, I do not know if xnet have a steam server.

Xnet does have a steam mirror but apparently only have the more popular content.

Anyway to find out what content it has? If it does have the content I desire is the traffic free like GP downloads?

As far as I know it's only selected content and there's no way to know what's going to be free or not.

1: Xnet host a steam content mirror via Recoil
2: Traffic from this server is considered local (as opposed to domestic or international) and zero rated on Xnet
3: Valve software controls what content is cached on steam content mirrors
4: There is no way to see what is on there and it will change over time

Basically you can't assume your steam game downloads will come from there and you have to assumed the worst case that the data usage will count and treat any data that doesn't count as a bonus.

However...

You could try using Steam Watch to only allow downloading from the ip address of the recoil server.

http://www.users.on.net/~marttinen/

Then after that review what wasn't able to download.

Do Xnet share their Steam server for other ISPs like how Slingshot do with their Akamai cache?

Only 3 content mirrors hosted in NZ

http://store.steampowered.com/stats/content/

Slingshot and Recoil (Xnet) are filtered to only the ip addresses of their own customers, not sure about what ip addresses Affinity is limited to.

Quite a few unfiltered mirrors in AU hosted by various ISP's over there.  Downloads pretty much come down at max line rate on Telecom at home from AU mirrors.

Would be good if Xnet shared the steam mirror at least to the APE... Maybe if it gets more traffic then it would get more content too and the flipside of offering it then to other ISPs would be a better service for Xnet's own customers.
