I need to update firmware on a router according to the instructions this should be done with direct ethernet cable between computer and router.  I don't have computer with an Ethernet port.

The closest thing I have is a Toshiba "Dyna-Dock".

This has an Ethernet port but only connects to the computer (Surface) via a UBS 2.0 cable.

Will it work?

Yes this should work fine.

They mainly don't want you updating firmware over a wireless connection, if I understand correctly.

Its an absurd hangover from the days of when there was not enough memory in devices to have the new firmware fully in memory before starting the flash process.

Really with so many no ethernet device households around now its time they dropped that from their web interface.

I've always done these router firmware upgrades over wi-fi without a problem so far.

Can always borrow someone else's computer to recover if it all goes pair shaped, or use the Dynadock.
