I have a Synology RT2600ac (main modem/router) and a Synology MR2200ac (mesh node) which I am trying to connect together via ethernet.

ONT > ethernet > RT2600ac > ethernet > MR2200ac

The RT2600ac works fine by itself, devices are connected via LAN and wifi just fine. The MR2200ac even works fine when it's close by and uses the 5GHz uplink, but it won't connect via ethernet at all. If I choose ethernet-only uplink it stops working so usually I leave it on auto and it falls back to the 5GHz uplink. The 5GHz connection isn't sustainable long term as the devices are usually a long way apart.

Both routers are new and so is the ethernet cabling so I don't think those are the issue. The Synology routers ask you to set up VLAN tagging per-port and I've tried turning it on and off for the port which the MR2200ac is connected on but it makes no difference. Here are the tagging settings:

Interestingly I have found a (less than ideal) workaround: if I put a third party modem before the RT2600ac (enabling VLAN tagging on that modem and disabling tagging on the RT2600ac) everything works great! The MR2200ac automatically connects via the ethernet uplink which is what I'm after.

ONT > ethernet > Third-party-router > ethernet > RT2600ac > ethernet > MR2200ac

The third-party modem is old and slow, and I'd rather not have to maintain thee routers in the house! I'd really like to get the RT2600ac and MR2200ac working together correctly without a third-party device. But perhaps the above workaround can help point us towards the answer: the VLAN tagging perhaps? I've tried toggling tagging on and off for then port which the MR2200ac is plugged into (LAN3 or LAN4) but it doesn't help.

Has anyone else had success with this setup? Can you offer any advice for troubleshooting the issue?

I'm using the latest Synology firmware: SRM 1.2.4-8081

Not familiar at all with the Synology interface or configuration, but you 100% do not want VLAN tagging on any port other than LAN1 (connection to the ONT).

Is there any chance that the MR2200ac itself is doing some VLAN tagging on its Ethernet port? Could explain why no traffic is passing when connected to the RT2600ac via Ethernet.

Disable all VLAN tagging on the LAN. You might need VLAN tagging on your WAN, but not the LAN. How do you have things wired up, as the RT2600ac has WAN ports which is the only place you should be using VLANs on a non-complex network.

Are you using a "yellow" ethernet cable anywhere in your network?
(These often don't have all the wires connected)

@OzoneNZ @toejam316 What you're saying makes sense, VLAN tagging should only be on the WAN port not any of the LAN ports. However there doesn't seem to be any way to do so on Synology routers. Here's the official support article on the topic, they only describe how to add VLAN tagging on your LAN ports:

This solution does actually work when you're only using one router, but mesh nodes don't connect via LAN when any tagging is in place.

@concordnz I don't have any yellow cables, all the cables are new CAT6 cables from PBTech.

Which port are you using for your mesh node? By the look of what I read, LAN 1 & 2 are both tagged now and cannot be used for anything else.
LAN 3 and 4 are perfectly fine to use. I'm picking you have your device connected to LAN 1 or 2, which is causing the problem. You might need to add a switch if you can't run everything you need off Port 3 and 4.
As I previously requested, can you let us know how you've wired things if this isn't the case?

@toejam316 I've been trying to get the mesh node running on LAN3 mainly, but have also tried LAN4. I've tried those ports with VLAN tagging on and off but it doesn't seem to work either way. LAN1 and LAN2 (tagged) are being used for other devices, specifically an AppleTV and an AV receiver, and those devices are online as expected.

Hi, what a strange setup, could you just try something for an experiment, connect a dumb switch to LAN1 connect all your devices including the MR2200 to that switch also.

@cyril7 Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately I don't have a switch I can use.

From what I'm reading Synology's VLAN tagging features aren't that great, intended for VoIP services not UFB connections. I have an open ticket with Synology so we'll see what they come back with. I like everything else about the Synology experience, I have a felling I'll need to go back to the third-party-router solution, but I'll get a more up-to-date modem.

Hi Andrew, so as another way to achieve the test I asked, just remove temporarily one of the devices on LAN1 or 2 (ATV for example) and plug the MR2200 into that.

@toejam316, I love Mikrotik products use their routers on all my private customers installs, and even at my main day job which is strict on what devices you must use I still sneak them in, if only to give me budget to do more other stuff rather than line Cisco's pockets ...........Anyhow if you want cheap but effective managed switches to drop the vlan tag or via a pair of switchtes transport both wan and lan over a single cable when you want to put a router in the lounge rather than the garage hub, then I use these TPLink EasySmart switches, they are cheap as chips, dont do a lot of things on the managed front, but do do vlans, so a no brainer, the 8 port version is around $80.

Thanks @cyril7, that did it. I have to connect the MR2200ac via LAN1 or LAN2 and it works fine! I'll leave LAN3 and LAN4 empty and if I need to wire up additional devices I can use a switch like the one you recommended. This has taken quite a while to resolve so thanks again for your help 👍

Hi Andrew, glad you got it sorted, just a note, if its working correctly via LAN1 and 2 and you are correctly using the RT2600 to deal with the WAN vlan10 tag (ie not other ISP router) then you dont need the switch I originally posted, it is fine, however its a managed switch as such a little dearer than an unmanaged one which would do the job you currently need of just expanding LAN1 and 2 out to more ports. Suitable units are below.

So what it sounds like is happening is the router isn't actually untagging your WAN, just tagging your LAN.
Pretty weird way to deal with it, but try setting VLAN 10 for LAN 3 and LAN 4 too, and I suspect that will get all your ports working. I still recommend getting a smart switch, setting Port 1 to bridge with Port 2, feed VLAN 10 in port 1 and strip it on Port 2, and feed that to your WAN port. The rest of the ports you can configure to switch your normal stuff, or you could start having fun with VLANs.

Hi, no this is not what's happening from reading what I find online, seems all a bit crazy to me, but using the iptv mode will assume tagged wan traffic and drop the tag for wireless, lan1 and, 2. As for lan3 and 4 it's vague as to what's happening, regardless a pretty ham setup, won't go down the Syno router path on my watch.
