Help please! I'm the OP of this thread: https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=66&topicid=322739

I'm now a proud owner of a GWN7002 and 2 x GWN7604. The idea was to set up one 7604 on PoE downstairs, and one 7604 wireless with a power adapter upstairs. I can probably connect both over PoE but prefer not to because the PoE cabling terminates upstairs in a bedroom instead of the office, and I don't want to rewire the house.

Problem is - I can't get the APs to sync with the GWN7002. All the manuals tell me that there should be a "Discover AP" button on the AP page in router UI, but there isn't one. I can see all 3 devices in the GWN app, they're all in the same network and group, and I've setup a WLAN that all three devices are members of. But none of that does anything - the only SSID I see broadcast is the default one for one of the 7604's.

Here's what the manual tells me I should be seeing, and here's what I see in the UI. When I click on either "Pair" or "Takeover" I get "No APs available".

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong here?

Disclaimer, I’m not familiar with the 7604.

Just checking, you’ve been able to log in to all three devices using the provided credentials?

Since you’re connecting the 7604 to the 7002 via Ethernet (at least start with this) you should be able to see it under “clients” in the 7002. Can you confirm?

Also, is the firmware up to date? You need to grab the most recent firmware URL from here and paste that into the UI every time there is an update.

Firmware updated everything?

have you tried setting up both AP hard-wired into the 7002 first?

Firmware updated. At least, it tells me no updates available.

I could try wiring both APs but at the moment I'm not seeing either the wired or the wireless one.

I've been able to log into each device using the GWN cloud app using the provided credentials. I know the devices are up and running, I know the app can see all three. I just can't figure a way to configure them into a single network controlled by the GWN7002.

As above, you need to grab the latest update URL and save it in the UI. It's my one complaint with Grandstream - a couple of years back they released a firmware update that had a issue and it became an issue of everyone who had auto update enabled. Instead of just having people turn off auto update, they've nuked the ability to even check for updates. Pretty silly approach, just hitting the check for updates button effectively does nothing.

https://www.grandstream.com/products/networking-solutions/wi-fi-management/product/gwn-manager

looks like you need to download software and configure it

"To set up a Grandstream GWN7002 with GWN Manager (local controller), you first install GWN Manager, then connect your PC to the router, access its web interface (default IP 192.168.80.1 or myrouter.grandstream.com), and initiate pairing with the manager by adding its MAC address and password, allowing for centralized control and deployment of Wi-Fi settings like SSIDs and security"

GWN Manager software should not be required for this. I certainly did not use it to configure my similar set-up (7003 + 7660 + 7660E). Grandstream are pretty big on the fact that one of their devices can manage up to 50 others (for more you need the GWN Manager software or GWN.Cloud).

I think it's something to do with the fact the 7604 is a switch with wifi, rather than just an access point. @Kookoo what does it say under Switch Management > Switches?

Edit: and what IPs do your switches have and have they been assigned by the router (DHCP?)

I just do it on GDMS cloud. www.gdms.cloud

  1. Reset all devices, with only one powered on at a time so bad configs dont spread
  2. Set up the router to get bare minimum access to the internet
  3. Follow this video to get everything loaded into the cloud controller.

I should clarify: On the devices screen where I show you loading the mac address and initial password, you can start by adding the router on that screen first. It too will call home to the cloud by default assuming you have touched no other settings in its local web gui except the bare minimum to get internet working.

Then once the router is loaded you can also add the access points to the same screen.

From your description it sounds like you want a wireless repeating unit upstairs and not hardwiring it back to the router?
If thats the case, once you have everything enabled and working while hardwired to the router
In GDMS go to settings > wifi > mesh section > enable mesh

Then once its pushed out the config change to enabe the mesh (2 mins), unplug one of the APs from the router. It should be able to then continue to operate while mesh repeating. You will need to find some way to power it through either though a POE brick or i think they have a 12v1A dc barrel jack.

Thanks for your replies everyone.

I've manually updated to the latest firmware version - made no difference.

@cddt - good idea. The Switch Management page looks very much like the AP Management one, the key difference being that it says on the page that the GWN7002 can only manage switches from GWN78xx series. So in theory, it could be that the GWN7002 is simply incompatible with GWN7604, but I really hope that's not the case. I can't see the IP addresses of the GWN7604 - as far as I know they haven't been assigned by the router because judging by its UI, it can't see them at all. The AP's don't connect to the internet because they aren't connecting to the router. In fact, for some reason I can still see the fully wireless AP still broadcasting its default SSID, but I can't log into it using any password that I have - the one for the network SSID that I created, or its default password, or the default password of the other AP. So I'll give it a hard reset and see what happens.

Thanks Ray, really appreciate it. That's exactly what I've done. It all looks right in GDMS/app but it just doesn't work. The GDMS view doesn't match the view in router UI or to reality. :)

I'll try resetting them all after new years and giving it another go.

And you login to the AP at all if you connect it direct to a laptop or PC?

Have you tried factory resetting everything?

Update. Factory reset everything and connected both APs to PoE ports. Both APs registered.

One of the two APs seems to have a faulty PoE port. When on PoE it reboots every couple of minutes or so. I tried swapping cables, router ports, comparing it side by side with the other AP. The faulty one is stable with an external adapter but not on PoE. Both are on the same firmware version, both been factory reset.

This also explained why nothing worked before - I wast trying to use the faulty one on PoE as the mesh master. Back to GoWireless it goes for RMA. Thanks for your help everyone.

GDMS isnt that good at managing routers at the moment and is a competing product to the controller built into the router - so I would ignore most of the router web gui and do everything from the GDMS interface.

I had a similar problem. POE access point would reboot. Turned out to be the power setting for the port. Defaulted to 6.5 watts and the access point would reboot when do
ing a speed test. Changed it to 13 watts and it all worked ok

Wait, I'm not sure I follow. GDMS isn't good at router management, but you still suggest using it instead of the built-in web gui? Also, do they not sync? It looks like whatever I've configured on the router isn't reflected on GDMS and vice versa.
