Dear Forum,

I have a problem with my Bluetooth connection between 2 hp laptops.

I had to reformat one of the laptops.

On the reformatted laptop (1) I installed bluetooth by hp. It searched and found the other laptop (2), and I paired the two laptops apparently successfully for file transfer. I click on the file transfer and can see laptop2’s exchange folder. I can move the icon across into laptop2’s folder, and can see it there. It says that it is copying but nothing happens and then it says incorrect permission.

I tried deleting both file transfer icons and using the Bluetooth setup wizard again but to no avail. It appears to work but in the same way it doesn’t.

Can you help?

Hope you are keeping well,

All the Best

Bill Z

It sounds like a permission problem. When you configure the Bluetooth Folder make sure it's created in a temporary folder not in your My Documents, or if it's under your own user make sure the folder has access permissions Read/Write for Everyone.

Dear Mauricio,

thanks very much for this, you have clearly pinpointed the problem; however I am not abe to resolve it.

Several times I have changed the attributes of the Bluetooth Exchange Folder by clicking Read Only only to find them changed back to Read Only.

I then tried to change the attributes of My Documents and all sub-folders - again it has been changed back. This leads to several questions:-

How was it set to raed Only when I didn't do it?

Why is it being reset?

How do I set My Documents for Read/write for everyone?

How do I put the Bluetooth Exvchange Folder somewhere else?

The Read/Write Permission is not the same as the Read Only status you see. To change this permission you have to right click the folder name, open Properties and select the Security tab. There you can add a new group ("Eveyone") and assign rights to this group when using the folder.

The other option is simply creating a folder (for example c:\bttransfer) and on your Bluetooth configuration change the selected folder to this one.

Dear Mauricio,

Thanks very much for your further help.

I have setup an exchange folder on the C drive as you said (bef), and used Bluetooth advanced configuration to browse to that folder. At the same time I set the other two options allowing remote access usage.

This was to no avail - same problem. It starts to connect, shows the icon and then says incorrect permission.

You said "open Properties and select the Security tab". I could not find this. I went to C://bef, rightclicked and properties. There were 3 tabs, General. Sharing and Customise. Can you further point me in the right direction?

I have still ben unable to change the read/write attributes, can you help with this?

Bill, you should see the tab if running Windows XP Pro, or if your user has administrator rights. Other than that I can't help much.

Dear Mauricio,

Thanks again for your help.

This is my laptop that no-one else uses and I am logged in as BillZ Administrator checked from User Accounts.

My operating system from Help and Support Centre is

Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
Version 5.1.2600
Product Id
Service Pack 2.0
Language 1033

I went back to both of the new exchange folders on the C drives and enabled network sharing on both machnes so that the folder had a little "sharing" hand on it (from the sharing tab in properties). No change, it starts to copy puts the icon on the shared machine and then it stops.

Would there be any point in uninstalling Bluetooth by HP?

If the problem was that I had entered the wrong pairing number would that be causing this? If so how would I remedy it?
