ShellNZ: What ya'll think?

Someone's been learning how to do this properly, I wish mine looked that tidy.

Don't get http://www.pbtech.co.nz/index.php?item=ITPA-PJJAVV that will give you two telephone connections where you want phone and data. Something like this should be better http://www.cablesdirect.co.nz/catalog/search?quickfind_needle=C-RJ45LT4

Remember, you will need two of these :)

Yep, one at each end right? of each ph/data port that I want (currently only TV area).

I wonder whether I should have a play with taking modem/router upstairs :) Can I do it....or cant I......only one way to find out :) If I do it myself I will understand it :)

Just rang local supplier, he has the right ones he reckons so I think I shall run off now and grab em. Wanna make sure all is working right, hopefully today.

Yes, that's right. One at each end.

Yes you can take the modem/router upstairs, you can put it anywhere you like now that you've got all the pairs connected in every socket (assuming that he hasn't just punched down the blue/white pair in each room).

The question though, is why would you? You might do it if it's a better location for your WIFI but otherwise by the patch panel is best so you can then connect your router to a number of different wall outlets.

Port 10 - If I take the phone RJ45 out and put media player directly into slot (essentially change from phone to data) shouldnt it work? I have just bought 4 of those adapters, one pair for Port 10, one pair for master bedroom.

Yes. Isn't it easy now that the panel is set up properly, plug the media player in to the socket in the room and plug from Port 10 on the patch panel to your network switch and it's all smiles

Not sure why you have a pair of adapters though for port 10, it doesn't sound like you need them.

Well.....looks like this isnt going to work until I take the modem/router upstairs. I could use a switch up there but it sounds like its going to be easier (according to 2 people) to put the modem/router up there and bring the little 5-port switch down here to my desk.

I still havent had the guts to actually unplug modem/router yet, lol. The twin adapters are for putting at phone/net end and hub end for both the ports I want to be phone/data.

Edit: Ahhhhh bugger it, gonna give it a go, lol. Might not be back for a bit, lol

Cant for the life of me figure out how to hook up the modem/router to the hub so I guess Im gonna have to leave it for now :(

lol, well perhaps it was a better day for him.
to get the router somewhere else, you are going to have to use one of your pairs of phone and data splitters on that run, and patch the unfiltered phone thru it. That will probably be on the orange or green pair coming from the ADSLsplitter, whichever one is connecting thru to the router already, if you just patch a phone port up to the router it wont work, because its filtered.

The line socket on the adsl will be an RJ11 or 12, so you could just poke whatever is in the router now into the cat-5 splitter, and use a straightthru RJ11 cable at the other end.

Then bring ethernet back from the router to the box on the data plugs of the cat-5 splitters, and into your ethernet switch.

I know this is going to be asking a lot, but just wondering if someone can use my latest photos to either scribble on in Paint, or verbally direct me, e.g take out RJ45 from 13 and put into ADSL port on router etc etc.

I just read your ditty 3 x times richm and still dont get, Im sorry :(

As it looks now:
01 = Master Bedroom (phone & data splitter)
02 = Upstairs spare room
03 = Sons room
04 = Daughters room
05 = Master bedroom spare port
06 = spare I guess
07 = spare
08 = spare
09 = Downstairs bdroom
10 = TV (phone and data splitter)
11 = Kids TV area
12 = Kitchen
13 = Dining area (where it did have 1 x ADSL line and 1 x Ethernet (to feed back upstairs).

Where is the switch? It would normally be in the cabinet there.

It looks like the cable from the green row of the telco block is the adsl signal, so pull it out of 13 and plug it into the phone port of one of your splitters, put the male of the pair splitter into 13, at the other end, put a pair splitter in and connect the phone port of it to the ADSL port of the router.

Check that you get adsl sync and that the computer up there will work.

once it does, put a cable from one of the 4 sockets on the router to the data half of the pair splitter in room 13, and then another patch cable in the cabinet from the data half of the splitter to a port on your switch. You should get link on switch and router and be good to go, although only at 100 megabit since you are splitting a single cable.

Well, tried the 2nd paragraph richms and nope, didnt work. Only powerlight and wireless light on on Linksys.

I shall have to pay BigHammer to come out again me thinks.

I visited Shelly yesterday and got her all sorted. Terminated the green DSL pair directly onto a spare RJ45 port at the end of the patch panel, and labeled DSL. Can now plug ADSL router directly in easily at the patch panel, and with a patch lead can redirect it to any port in the house in future if she wants too (though cupboard is the best place for it I think).

lol, was hoping you would actually post first coffeebaron as I had no idea how to explain what you did.

I want to thank everyone here so much, of course especially coffeebaron and BigHammer for coming to my house to help me sort this all out.

Cant believe its actually all done, hehe, only took 4 months to finally be where I want to be.

Its all working wonderfully :) For some reason the downstairs bedroom is only getting 10Mbit, mebe theres a wire skewiff in there, will have a look at some stage, not hugely important anyways.

Everything is truly great in my world today!!!!

Again everyone, thanks so much for everyones input over the past 4mths :)
