I have successfully set up a DS212J as a home network and would now like to be able to access the diskstation via the internet. Basically, I would like access to be able to access the Diskstation manager (DSM) and to be able to view or grab files on the diskstation.

Problem is, I don't have much experience with port forwarding and the like, so I am a bit nervous in setting up via the EZ internet wizard in the DSM. Therefore, I would REALLY appreciate any advice on appropriate set up parameters. My internet connection is via Telstraclear (now Vodafone) cable in Wellington.

I have uploaded images of the EZ internet set up screens. Many thanks in advance to any assistance - cheers

You only use "Direct to the Internet" and the firewall if your NAS is plugged into the cable modem and will be routing for you. You already have a router and firewall in the router so you can disable the firewall on the NAS.

Make sure the NAS is using a static IP address. You might want to use DHCP reservation on the router to always assign the same IP to the NAS. This way if you change the router and plug the NAS into another router it will get whatever IP the other router gives to it, making automatically accessible. If you configure the static IP on the NAS itself then your new router would have to be on the same subnet, etc.

With this out of the way and knowing the IP address your NAS is going to get (because you reserved it) then you go to port forward in your router and put in the port numbers in each rule, forwarding to the same port number on the IP your NAS is going to use.

That's all. The wizard setup on the NAS is if the router is in their database and if the NAS can configure the router. You can do the same manually as explained above.
