I have been looking at a number of both fixed-line and wifi print servers, and often see statements that whilst 'normal' print functions work, others like scanning will not.

Is this (a) because the server inherently cannot handle such functions, or (b) just because the computer accessing the networked printer is unlikely to have the appropriate scanning software installed?

Twain scanning works fine over an IP connection however you can't have a server in the way as it would need to relay that capability and that usually isn't supported.

Lots of printers with scanning capability have wifi or wired connections and the scanning works.
