got a couple of rooms that only have one cat5e to the socket...
is there any reason why i couldnt use the other pairs in the cable for a second/third/fourth outlet on the one cable?

All 4 pairs are required for a 1G connection - two pairs are required for a 10/100mbit connection - so you can make one into two (but slower speed) - if you want to do this dont adjust your wiring but add a data/data RJ45 spliter @ each end.

 

 

 

If you need more than two or want more that one 1G connection then buy a smaller Gigaport switch to put on the end
