Hey

So I have just moved into a new place and my room has internet provided via an ethernet cable. (The cable runs to a normal Vodafone VDSL modem if that helps).

I have an D-Link AC1750 Modem/Router and was wondering if I can plug the ethernet cable into this to give me WiFi in my room?

Yes, but you need to do a couple of things on the Dlink first.

First, you need to find out what IP range the VDSL modem is providing over the Ethernet cable in your room:

Plug a laptop into the Ethernet cable - check you have internet.
Open a Command Prompt (In windows I am assuming) and type IPCONFIG /ALL
The results for the Local Area Connection are what you need - most importantly Gateway Address (which should be the IP address of the VDSL modem/router).
You will need to make sure your Dlink is in the same range as the VDSL router (so if gateway address is 192.168.1.1, the Dlink will need to be in that range, I'd suggest either 192.168.1.254, or close to it). If you know the DHCP range of the VDSL router, make it outside this.

Without it connected to the VDSL, connect a laptop to it using a cable and log into the Dlink, then:

Give it a new IP address (that you worked out above - NOT the same as the VDSL router has already got, and not in the DHCP range that the VDSL router is using). You will probably need to re-login to the Dlink on the new IP address you have given it.
Disable DHCP on the Dlink
Setup your Wifi SSID and passwords.

Unplug laptop from Dlink
Plug Ethernet cable from VDSL into LAN port of Dlink
Connect to Dlink via WiFi

You should be away.
