There is a device 'The Mosquito' that is going to be used in New Zealand in public places that every New Zealander has a right to access at any time of the day

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=10879766

Main point is that it targets everyone under a certain age regardless of what they are doing

Not to mention the potential health effects

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mosquito

I am over 25 and I can hear the sound. Have a listen for yourself
http://www.teenbuzz.org

If you live in the area where it is going to be deployed please make a complaint with the Human Rights Commission so this device can be banned

Didn't kids use this on there cell phones in class, so only the teens could hear it ringing and the tutors couldn't.

It's just a gimmick and that too shall pass.

I'm about to turn 40 and I can hear up to almost 20kHz (drops off around 18-19), which helps with being an amateur sound engineer ;-). Still, I would not object just like I do not object to Tazers, as it is highly unlikely to ever be used on me. The part of the human brain that deals with consequences only develops around age 25 (18 year old is the perfect soldier thinking his indestructible), so there does need to be special measures for dealing with young people. Babies should not be affected, as the correct use of the equipment is late at night for loitering, not for people (including young people) having a romantic sunset stroll at the beach.

As a non-violent method of stopping disorder then bravo. Personally I am (cough cough) slightly older than the target audience and I can hear it quite clearly (epic fail?)

IMO storm=teacup

Ear plugs. Easy. I recommend this solution to anyone suffering unwanted noise of any kind. They really work.

Makes the "mosquito" pointless and ineffective. They will eventually break...and like many, many things in NZ...won't be fixed.

Does it work on drunk people, or will they just yell at each other over top of it?

I'm 31 and can hear 18 kHz at the volume level I'd normally listen to music, but if I turn the volume up a bit I can easily hear 22 kHz. Should volume have much of an effect?

I'm 15 and I have just started to not be able to hear the 17mHz tone. My hearing loss from continued glue ear (after grommets) has an advantage!!!

In principle I dislike this idea. Chasing kids away from public locations during 'unsociable' hours is wrong. By definition public locations are just that: public. Install CCTV and lighting. Neither of those harm or cause people discomfort.

I support the school taking measures to prevent loitering on their property after hours but if it impacts the public space, eg: people walking in a park nearby I think it's wrong.

One of the uses is remote activation when e.g. loitering is spotted on CCTV, not necessarily left on all night to prevent young kids from potentially loitering.
