Just wanted to get some thoughts on this.

I want to get myself a reasonably basic digital music player with FM radio, but I'm also planning to buy a new phone in the next couple of months and will probably end up going with the Sony Ericsson V640i. Given that the V640i has music playing features I'm wondering if there is any point in me buying a seperate music player now.

If I buy a decent pair of headphones would the sound quality from the V640i be as good as a standalone music player or a Walkman branded phone?

My existing Nokia 6630 is capable of playing music but the sound quality is not acceptable to me so I would definitely want something better in that respect.

You often find the quality being "compressed" in many phones so there are no loss of hearing lawsuits (Nokias are a prime example).

I notice the Okta touch audio for example has too much bass and almost a hard shelf cutoff at 11KHz though it's not compressed thank god.

Sometimes there are glitches too, The 6275 can pump out some great volume from the pop port connector if you also plug in a 2.5mm jack! to fool the electronics!

If you do find a phone with great audio quality I'd ben keen to know.

Thanks for that. I see that Bond and Bond has 20% off Sony for the next few days so I'll probably get myself a Sony B105 Walkman and then I'll be able to afford a nice pair of headphones to go with it. A new phone would be stretching the budget even with 20% off.

I'm not really itching to replace my Nokia 6630 at the moment anyway because even though it's aging I really don't use it for anything other than phone calls and text messages. I guess from that point of view a basic phone and seperate music player is more cost effective for my needs.

Do have a play with a walkman phone though, I'd be keen on knowing if thr audio is "modified" of if it just shoves out unencumbered crisp audio.. the old Qtek 1010 had the best sound quality which progressivly got worse as the phones got newer and the okta touch has the worst.

if you're looking for a music player that has mp3 and radio i would suggest the sandisk sansa series. i had a sansa e260 (4gb hard drive with expansion microSD slot that takes up to 2gb cards). the audio quality was amazing and i prefered it over ipods because its scrolling wheel is mechanised unlike the ipods. the expansion slot for microSD is also extremely useful, i used to leave my microSD empty so i could use it instead of my 2gb usb flash drive. the sansa also seemed to plug and play with any computer i plugged it into. i eventually sold my sansa simply because i brought a nokia N95 and it serves my music needs perfectly with a 8gb microSD card in there. also just ordered some wireless bluetooth headphones for it. I've found the audio quality of my n95 to be prefect considering mp3 player standards and in no way does the audio appear compressed to counter loss of hearing.
