I have not had the watch long but have been impressed by how good this watch is in bright sunlight dispute having the brightness level only set to 4. That is until I discovered that when outside it goes into 'outdoor mode' which automatically turns the brightness up to 10 (and the brightness cannot be adjusted while in the mode).

Anyone know if you can turn 'Outdoor mode' on or off?

I can find no mention of 'outdoor mode' in the manual. I thought it might have been this: 'Auto low brightness: Set the Gear to automatically adjust the brightness depending on
the ambient light conditions.' setting in Display but turning it on or off makes no difference.

1) @MikeAqua I'm with you re the banks. Is yours parallel imported?

No I bought it from Harvey Norman but I don't think the banking app from my banks extend to the Android smart watches.

Is there a way for the watch to 'learn' the chip from a debit-card or similar?

Actually I don't think I even have Samsung pay installed on my S3 frontier?  Should I have it?  I can't seem to find it in the app store.

Everything I can find online tells me it should be part of the gear OS, but it isn't.  If I turn the NFC on, it tells me there is no payment app installed.

Is it only available in the US or something?

@n95 - I looked a few months ago i.e. before the Tizen 3 update, and couldn't find anything either to adjust brightness outdoors. Mind you, didn't try looking very hard because happy with battery despite this, and it allows me to see the watch face despite sun + sunglasses.

@MikeAqua thanks for reply, I'm slowly coming to conclusion that NZ banks aren't on Samsung Pay. This is distinct to Android Pay, which e.g. BNZ is on, and distinct again to bespoke banking apps that use NFC e.g. ASB, ANZ. At least that's my novice understanding, supported by e.g. https://www.geekzone.co.nz/forums.asp?forumid=97&topicid=205887&page_no=2

I've checked for the Tizen update via the Gear app and it says it's up to date even though it's still on version 2.3.2.3. Has everyone else got Tizen 3 already? Is there a way to force the update? Or do I just have to wait my turn?

On a separate question I have read in a couple of the places that the S3 will take any 22mm watch strap?  Has anyone actually put standard watch strap on their gear?  I don't like the feel of the silicon and the buckle is a PITA. Keen to explore other options. And I prefer to go to a shop so I can see before buying.

Thinking about black metal with a hinge clip.

I think you will find that is the version number for the Samsung gear app on your phone only (same as mine) , If you look on your watch and go into setting on the watch itself and "about gear>software information it should show version 3.0.0.1 which is what mine shows.

@MikeAqua re 22mm watchstrap - a couple of people on this thread have got some from Aliexpress (see 1-2 pages back in this thread), seems to be fine.

@Lizard1977 - if you haven't got it already as per Mspec, then just wait. I only got it a few weeks ago, and others a month or more prior.

Nope, the watch definitely shows Tizen 2.3.2.3 under settings.

According to Samsung Tizen 3 is available in NZ via updates in gear app on the phone.

http://www.samsung.com/nz/support/skp/faq/1141290

Tizen3 software is available for New Zealand variants SM-R760 (Frontier) and SM-R770 (Classic).
This software has been launched during week 47 of 2017.
The user may software upgrade the Gear through the Samsung Gear app.

To do this, go to Samsung Gear app on the phone in which the Gear is connected to.
Then select settings/About Gear/Update Gear Software.
From this location the user can decide whether to download updates automatically or choose to do so manually.

I've manually checked for updates several times and it's telling me the latest software updates are installed on the watch.  The watch shows Tizen Verison as 2.3.2.3.

Gonna try my luck with chat support.

Edit: Escalated to a senior tech for response via email

Mike Aqua - what variant do you have? I've got the 3G version which is the SM R765N so maybe that's the difference.

Wow I am surprised you have not got the update I got it on the 27th of November last year. Mine is just the classic but I would not have thought there was a difference between the two to warrant a different upgrade.

I had the same issue as other in this thread with not being able to update to Tizen3. Spoke to support and got this answer:

Going back, I understand that this is important to you, however, for Tizen 3, we have it available for model number SM-R760 and SM-R770 at the moment. We haven't got any idea on when it will be available for SM-R765N.

The model number on my watch is SM-R765N so I don't think I will be getting the update anytime soon. According to support the SM-R765N version is the one with the embeded SIM.

I have the SM-R765N with 3G capability as well.  I got a similar response from Samsung, although they did say they would update me when it became available.
