I keep seeing an ad for a IT tech position in East Tamaki.

(on Trademe for "Senior Software Support Engineer" by Recruit I.T.)

I was curious, so I did some digging into the area.

This web page indicated 278 offences per 1000 people.

So I'm definitely not moving there.

Pretty broad brush statement....

Otara has it's issues...I grew up there.

But 2mins down the road is Botany which is a solid suburban community - and I lived there for 4 years without issue.

And if you want to live in a coastal/semi rural/urban environment - with a 15-20min drive through the country to get to work you could always come and live in our neck of the woods ie. Beachlands : )

So yeah depends where exactly you want to live....

Thanks. It's always nice to hear of good neighbourhoods.

I hate commuting. Just a 30 minute commute to work, works out to be close to 10 days spent in a car per year.

((240 days - 11 holidays) * 1 hour / 24 hours)

I've know several married people who spend 2 hours commuting, each way!

thats also fine, but within 5 minutes of there are good suburbs. which only equals 1.5 days.

your point is pretty moot

Unless you work at home, commuting is a thing...

If it's a major issue, negotiate early starts / ends to your work day and avoid the majority of traffic.

During the school holidays, I had a 7 minute drive to work.

During non-holiday periods, up to 35 minutes.

Now another route has opened up, it's 10-15 minutes even during busy times. As Auckland grows, it'll probably go up to 30 minutes in about 2 years time... such is the nature of the city.

Whitford, beachlands, flat bush etc... all areas that are fine that are close to east tamaki and wouldn't require getting on the motorway.

Yes, it is true, East Tamaki is either side of the crime highway (Ti Rakau Drive) between the richer area of Howick, Pakuranga, Botany etc and much poorer parts of South Auckland.The stat is a lot higher than I would expect though. I also think the info in that table is largely nonsense without context.

I have lived in Howick, Pakuranga, East Tamaki (Botany in theory) and Highland Park and although there are some issues, it isn't near as bad as that stat would lead you to believe. I wonder if the stats are actually including the industrial area of East Tamaki which does see a number of issues, but nobody actually lives there. It is practically useless without a map of which areas they include in East Tamaki as 5 mins either direction will put you in Botany (57 offences), Dannemora (39 offences) Pakuranga (Not Listed), Otara (Not listed) or Manukau (Not listed). Howick is 10 mins away and has 125 offences. It also doesn't include what counts as an offense. Is it parking fines, theft, violent crime etc? If it is a lot of parking fines and traffic infringements, who cares.

The point is the same as everyone else has made though, You can find plenty of nice places within 5 and 15 minutes drive depending on traffic. I wouldn't put much stock in that site with no context.

I think you are better of with the original source of data. The NZ Police does publish stats for your perusal (Warning, site does require Flash).

My formula was wrong for commutes..

It should have been ((260 days - 11 holidays) * commute time both ways / 24 hours).

My friend looked at the stats, and indicated it was mostly car break-ins.

Given the choice between car break-ins and being mugged with a knife, I'll take the car break-in.

So, whenever you get a new job, do you move to a house/apartment in the same suburb?

I've worked in East Tamaki, it was fine. It is a large area, a lot of it industrial.

So, whenever you get a new job, do you move to a house/apartment in the same suburb?

I've worked in East Tamaki, it was fine. It is a large area, a lot of it industrial.

That will also skew the crime figures - lower population and industrial/commercial

Looking at the JD it'd say it's not much about the location, but unrealistic expectations to find a senior candidate willing to work on a short term contract with such low rate.
