Obviously requires a U.S. credit card at the moment, but reports are that once you've set it up (change your region settings to the U.S.) it works with normal payWave/PayPass terminals in Australia.

Will it be the same here?

I don't have a 6 yet, but added my card to a mates last night (he now has to find something less than 1 usd as that's all I have in my US account!)

I'm still not 100% sure what Apple pay needs to work, and there are conflicting reports on existing EMV standards, new tokenisation standards etc.

Have changed my region to US and I then get prompted to add a card within passbook. Tried an ASB visa card and ANZ Mastercard which didn't work (as expected).

I wonder if the Air NZ money card (Mastercard?) might work.

Can anyone recommend a virtual US credit card?  Lots of them to try...

No NZ card can possibly work right now - it requires the bank to have partnered with Apple.

I have tried with the below different CC's (NZ and overseas ones) and none of them work. Yes Apple have to Approve them to be able to work :-(

ANZ
BNZ
Westpac
ASB
AirNZ Onesmart
Payoneer

Yeah they definitely have to be from a US bank that supports Apple Pay. My Chase Visa Debit added fine.

Just waiting for a chance to test it out.

So my mate just went to countdown in Auckland CBD, it worked!! Bought a 99c crunchie bar.

Looked in my US chase account and there is a 0.80 USD debit pending :-)

He said it was very quick and seamless. Will be awesome when it launches here properly!

So confirms that shops won't need to officially support Apple Pay or upgrade their NFC terminals. All you need is PayWave/Paypass.

That was well known - anything that supported Paywave/Paypass would work. It's just that you needed a supported US bank, as none in NZ yet have agreements to offer the service.

I was 90% sure this was the case, but this comment from the head of Visa NZ made me think otherwise:

Visa's head of emerging products and innovation, George Lawson, said all the conditions were now in place for "a mass shift" to mobile payments here. "It's a huge step in the right direction," he said. "New Zealand's got the infrastructure and the ecosystem to really drive this; it's just a question of timing." Visa is aiming to roll out a new security feature next year which will be implemented for the first time with Apple Play. "The actual timing- that's a decision Apple would need to make," said Lawson.

It was known by some maybe.  But "well known" is a bit of a stretch.

Try changing region settings to US.

I'm guessing they rolled it out in the US first so that it didn't take too big a hit.

To be honest given the data breaches and the antiquated system they have over there it was more a situation of an immediate need given that NZ, Europe, Australia etc. already have many of the safe guards that make the whole Apple Pay more of an 'icing on the cake' rather than a necessity.

The only problem with the US is that there are only very minimal numbers of NFC terminals right now - even with EMV being mandated by 2016 most retailers don't yet even have EMV capable terminals. One would assume however that anybody replacing terminals now will have EMV + NFC support which is exactly what has happened in the rest of the world.

I've used Paywave probably half a dozen number of times in the US in the past year on recent visits and have pretty much had a "WTF" kind of look from staff, most of whom had never seen anybody actually use it before and were totally amazed by the technology. One wasn't even sure I'd paid.
