hi guys, my friend at work is having an issue with his new IP4s .. it's from japan, and he's trying to get it to work on XT.

calling etc is fine, txt too.

but no mobile data ..in fact ..no APn settings in the phone at all.

is there a way around it?   phone isn't jailbroken, just fresh out of the box actually..

i just deal with android so any help would be cool,

You have to manually enter APN settings for XT

If it's on XT and has the 11.1 carrier update then it's correct - there is no APN setting. The carrier update automatically configures everything to work. Is 'Celular Data' switched on?

This is only correct if you're using an iPhone that is not running iOS 5.

As (the title says) it is  an iPhone 4S it has to be running iOS5 and yes.. plug into iTunes... check for updates and it should download the latest carrier settings (or it may have done it in the past) and it should "just work"

if they have installed and APN settings (such as from my website) then remove any APN profiles from settings.. general. profiles.

cheers guys.

interesting that apple bake apn settings right into the os like that.

the mobile data toggle was def on ... but no mobile data icon appears in status (does iphone do that) just the signal strength one.  and he can't browse etc ..says no mobile data connection avail.

so there should be no apn settings visable, and after a update via itunes ...it should just work ...

Is it a new SIM or one from a previous iPhone? I'd suggest trying it in another 4S if you have access to one, or in an iPhone 4.

If it still doesn't work I'd be getting in touch with Telecom to see what the story is.

If calling and texting works fine it could be something from Telecom's end.

Just double checking here guys.. SO the xt settings are included in the itunes carrier update.. Even though xt isn't an official carrier?

That's right. It's rumoured that Telecom will be getting it officially soon (announcement tomorrow?).

Recommend that you use the carrier update from apple because it fixes the issues like voice mail button not working correctily with sim V1's and V2's

would it matter that the xt sim he's using is simply chopped down to size by the telecom store?

or is that essentially what a micro sim is ?

That's essentially what a micro-SIM is.

Have you done what I suggested and tried the SIM in another iPhone and/or gone back to Telecom to speak to them? From what you've said so far there's no obvious reason why it shouldn't be working.

It might do if it is not version 3 sim. I would buy a proper micro sim. Also, I wonder if they have to have the roaming on?

If you can't get it to work. A quick fix is hook the iPhone up to a wifi network -> Launch Safari and goto http://unlockit.co.nz follow the steps and download a APN provision to the phone. This will set up the APN settings for you.

To remove the file it downloads go into the Settings -> General -> Profiles and click remove

I used them in the past when doing iOS Betas where apple removed the APN settings and from the dark old days where Vodafone stupidly blocked you from changing the settings and had a non functioning APN set up.

However you will not be able to set up a personal hotspot but everything else should work

Hope this helps

cheers for all the advice fellas, thought id pop back and update ya all.

was just his account in the end.  he was overseas not long ago and had his phone robbed...i guess telecom turned his data off.

but took at least three escalations before someone at telecom actually thought resetting his data account would be a good idea.

anyways, working
