Apple has just release iOS 5.0.1 to the public, bringing fixes for battery life issues introduced with iOS 5. The release also brings several other enhancements including multitasking gestures for the original iPad.

This update contains improvements and other bug fixes including:

- Fixes bugs affecting battery life
- Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
- Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
- Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation

iOS 5.0.1 is available for iPhone (4S, 4, and 3GS), iPod touch (third- and fourth-generation), and all iPad models. The update is available for download via iTunes, but is not yet showing up as an over-the-air update for direct download to iOS devices.

Me: Anybody got it yet? Whats it like compared with iOS 5.0?

Its showing up as an OTA update now. I'm downloading it to my iPhone 4 as I type this. Go to Settings->General->Software Update to get it.

Sorry, you misunderstand. I may be chiming into the 4S owners thread, but I'm currently still one generation behind :-)

Also chiming in with my iPad 2 5.0 to 5.0.1 update experience over 3G (shouldn't be too different for iPhone 4S given same processor): update size shown as 46.8MB. Download over Vodafone 3G in a not-so-strong signal location took around 10 minutes. Entire update process from start of download to system running on 5.0.1 took 23 minutes.

I'm guessing iPhone 4S (pre-ordered last week) may ship with 5.0.1.

Doubt it, the update was only finalized today and the phones are already supposed to have shipped.

How do these OTA updates work? My 4S battery has been fairly lame since I got it a couple of weeks back, but I'm wanting to see if the phone will 'Push' a notification to me about the update. Surely they don't expect your average joe to frequently go Settings -> Updates and check themselves?

You can manually check for iOS updates by going to the Settings app and selecting “General” and “Software Update.” This will query Apple’s servers. If an update is found, you are given the option to download and install the file.

Apple will also alert users of system updates, the same way it does in Mac OS X.

Its a true 'update' too.. not a huge 600+mb file. Took less than 2 minutes to download it for me OTA.

Sorry, I was talking about those pre-ordered through the Apple Store. Mine is still shown as "processing". As shipments are behind demand (Apple keeps very low inventory even when they've caught up) it's likely they will ship with whatever is the current version of iOS.

A quick sleep deprived update from me. Got home from Telecom in Wellington just after 1 AM, and put the 4S through most of its paces until about 7 when I finally crashed. I'm pleased to say it was only I who crashed, the phone didn't.

The subjective feeling is that it's just snappier compared with the 4. I'm using the built-in screenreader for blind people, VoiceOver, which was a little more laggy on the 4 with iOS5. Getting response with the virtual keyboard just feels smoother, very responsive. Larger apps load more quickly, as you'd expect with the A5 dual core processor, and it's a joy to have so much storage free after having a nearly full phone before.

While Apple have had VoiceOver in iOS since the 3GS was released, I was particularly keen to try Siri despite the warnings about it not officially supporting the NZ English dialect, as using the virtual keyboard as a blind person is just not as efficient for me as good old T9 input on a number pad, where I could fly almost as fast as I can type, and that's fast.

The New Zealand accent varies a lot, so your mileage may vary, but when I was running the original build of 5.0, I was getting excellent results with the input language for Siri set to Australian English. It understood about 98% of everything I said the first time. It does have quite an attitude when you ask it stupid questions, which is fun. Repeatedly ask it to tell you a story, for example, until you get one. On the practical side, dictating appointments in natural language really does work, as do reminders. The Wolfram Alpha integration is well done, although when I asked it "what is 10 pounds in kilograms", it thought I meant British pounds as in the currency, and said you couldn't do any conversion. I asked it "how many kilos are there in 10 pounds", and it spat back the answer quickly. I asked it when President John F. Kennedy was born, then when he died. It not only gave me the answer, but also relevant information including other events that happened that day, sunrise, sunset etc.

I've dictated a note into the Notes app, and sent a couple of tweets. That went quite well, but it was at this point, since phrases are longer and you're bound to see an increased error rate, that I tried UK English to see how that would work. In 5.0, for me the results were very comparable. In 5.01, which I installed the hard way just before the release, since I'm a registered Apple developer, the results were very different. The error rate, even with basic Siri commands, went way up in Australian English. Whatever they've done to tweak it for Ausies have made it much worse for me as a kiwi. So at least for me, there's no doubt British English is the language I'll now have to stick to.

I've not been able to test the texting features in Siri, since the porting fairies have still not done their magic. But I have taught Siri about relationships, IE who is my wife, my brother, my manager. There are a number of ways you can do this, but simply speaking it in natural language is enough.

I'm pleased with the purchase so far, and Siri is working far better than I dared to hope.

OTA update is around 65-70mb. Update through iTunes is 600+mb.
