Notice however that apple don't want the ugly dongle attachment, to be attached their own headphones, so they made sure their ones come with the lightning plug. The fact that you can't use lightning earphones on any other devices, as no other devices have lightning ports, is going back in time when phone manufacturers used to have their own proprietary connectors. I believe one reason phone manufacturers adopted a standard fitting eg. f, was to reduce waste and all the proprietary parts ending up in landfills, when they could be reused..

1. You might buy our supporting devices such as headphones, docks and so on.

2. Your tendency to change camps is lessened if you have invested in other devices with OUR connector.

Being a bit more sticky, pretty much. Marketing.

I wouldn't be surprised to see headphones bundled with detachable cords with a lightning one and 3.5mm one, or specific models for iPhone.

It is not something that is new, there are plenty of iPhone only accessories including carplay head units etc. that only work with Apple.

Yes this does help lock users to an ecosystem, as does App Store purchases, Alarm clock docks etc.

The fact is there are so many iPhone users with phones with lightning ports that there will/is no shortage of headphones that can be used, that with the adaptor we seem to be well catered for.

Looks like they are doing a bad job on money grabbing or marketing (?!) if they include a complicated adapter with an IC inside and allowing people to continue using their 3.5mm audio devices.

There are big margins in these compared to wired headphones, as they cost significantly more in most cases. They don't really want to sell lightning headphones, as they say the future is wireless, but people will need something during the transition. So the lightning ones they provide are more of a transition. Personally I prefer wired over wireless, and it also limits RF exposure.

This isn't proven though and the device is still completely stuffed with components instead of just having a big gap where the headphone shackles was.

Also they seems to have enlarged the taptic portion of the device to create a much better feedback for most of the UX. It's a lot stomringer than the 6s/6 for sure.

There are quite a few current iPhone users (on tech blogs etc) who have said they won't buy the 7 because of the jack removal and will now look at alternatives - but, I suspect, probably not enough to worry apple. And any revenue loss will likely be less than the additional revenue apple will now earn from headphone-related accessories. Apple may be many things, disingenuous amongst these – of which this latest issue is an example – but they are not stupid when it comes to revenue gathering.

But signs are beginning to appear with some of apple’s long-term fans that their patience is beginning to wear thin. Grumblings which were unheard of a year or so back, so maybe the worm is beginning to turn (ever so slowly).

But your fact doesn't hold up to the fact that they literally included a 3.5mm jack adapter in the box so people can keep on using their old accessories without buying new ones.

Interestingly the haptic feedback in the 7/7 Plus seem to be a lot more finer grained than the 6s. For example you can scroll through the UI for setting alarms and you can feel each 'click' as the wheel spins.

Also

if you have a folder with an app with a notification you can 3d touch the folder to go straight to that app. you can 3d touch notifications on the lock screen to go to those apps. you can 3d touch the flashlight in control center for different light intensities. you can 3d touch reminders to check off something or create new reminders

But have they sold any bluetooth headphones for it yet? I mean the airpods weren't available at launch, when people would have purchased them. Pople who want to buy expensive headphones wouldn't buy apple ones, because apples have never been the best for sound quality. Other manufactures make bluetooth headphones, and it is likely that you will get some companies specializing in them, and creating ones far better and cheaper than apple can make them for. If Apple could have created their own wireless technology that they could license out for wireless headphones, that was better than bluetooth. The W1 chip they do have is basically just bluetooth.

Well, maybe. But there is an extra cost to the lightening cable. Both in licensing to Apple for using it, and in having to add a DAC (digital audio converter) for the Lightening cable connection (because the output is a digital signal).

I have the 7 Plus, love the taptics in it and the new home button. Not a big fan of the 3.5mm connector - it feels flimsy. Have not noticed anything bad about the sound quality versus the 6S Plus that I had.

My wife has a 7 plus on order. Her comment tonight

"VF are useless. They can't tell me when it will be delivered and they have taken so long that they have sucked the joy out of it altogether - I don't even want the thing now!"
