i love how everyone says ooo android is so much better, i want an iphone but this makes me want to get android so much more etc etc...

the fact of the matter is that the android platform is still so much in its infancy... sure its got great potential but until it slows down its developmental cycle, you'll end up with a phone that will be outdated in 6months... and unless you go with something like the nexus one you might be left behind in terms of updates - its all down to the manufacturer...

and to me this is one of the great problems with android at the moment... the fragmentation of the OS

the vanilla android also seems very bland, for lack of a better term. sure manufacturers can add their own themes etc on but from what i have heard they tend to make the UI worst more than anything...that and the sh*t battery, i dont think any of the high end android phones can match the iphone 4 in terms of battery life... i could be wrong tho.

The way I see it, Apple has got it right in three areas:

- UI consistency/hardware consistency
- app catalog
- battery life

I am willing to take a leap of faith and at least TRY other platforms, even though everything at home is Apple (down to the router). May not be the best experience, but at least I can formulate my own opinion.

i have tried it... me and my friend swapped phones for a week - iphone 4 and galaxy S.
and what i have written in my above post is what i felt after that week.

having said that, 1 week didnt really feel like enough, but it was enough for me to gauge my first impressions of the platform.

you will have to watch out with the multitasking... android gives you alot more control over what "multitasking" means but it destroys your battery life...

I think battery life is going to be slightly disappointing for smart phone users for some time. It took a while for 2G phones to get to a week of normal usage, then the same again when 3G became the norm. Now we're running phones which are more powerful than most computers were just a few short years ago, and we expect them to do so on a battery, for days on end.

I've lived with an iPhone 3G for almost 2 years now, and I quickly adapted to the shorter battery life. It's pretty easy for me as I'm mostly desk based for my work. iPhone cable attached to work and home computers (sync at home, charge at work) and a charger to take with me when travelling. Have a car socket adapter that gives me two powered USB ports. Even flying now I can charge off USB ports on many planes, so non-stop use from Auckland to London is possible, and I arrive with a fully charged battery.

Yes, it's a bit of a pain to begin with, but it's a short and easy adaptation and a small price to pay to have a powerful computer in my pocket all the time.

I usually get a day and a half's worth of battery life out of the 3GS with some light GPS usage, push email on 24/7 on wifi/3G.

hm... how do i put this, we live together so we kinda swap whenever we feel like it, so one day i'll take his galaxy to uni, 2days later i'll be like rawr, i miss my iphone... weird but whatever, we both have our stuff synced to google so no problems there, all it takes is a simple log in and contacts, email, calendar change over.

we've been swapping on and off since i got my iphone

juz asking ppl who bought IP4 from Manukau voda or first mobile, do they only allow u to buy the IP4 with IP contract? cause i already have a contract wif voda and i am not sure if they will allow me to resign.....

mm... well this will sound pretty biased (since i have invested my money into an iphone) but whatever...

the feel of the device is certainly difference, where the iphone feels nice and solid in your hands, the galaxy is definitely a bit more plastic and light in feeling... too light for my tastes and doesnt have the premium feel of the iphone4. the enlarged screen is nicer although not as hi res as the iphone 4. having said that, for everyday use, you dont notice it as much as i would like to admit lol...

touchwiz theme that samsung have put over makes it look somewhat generic and bland as i said before... android marketplace is not as filled with apps as apple's appstore is but what i could play with was good i suppose. android is definitely different in the way that it does things compared to apple... but once you adapt it gets bearable. i have this odd desire to flick through all the settings and see what each one does. iphone on the other hand doesnt have as many options to play with.

android customiseability feels alot better. one example is swype which i must say gets pretty useful when texting or writing out an email. sometimes when im texting on my iphone i remember my old number keypad and wish i cud text like that again, android lets you do this, apple does not...

there are things that android does well and things that iphone clearly trumps it in. i found scrolling through menus and websites to stutter sometimes - something which i hardly ever encountered on my old ipod touch and iphone4.

i did not encounter any "reception" issue with the galaxy and he always gives me crap about my iphone but meh...

overall thought, apple seems to have created a more balanced phone with alot more polish, whereas android does some stuff well and some not so well... and as i said before, until it matures as a platform, i myself wouldnt buy it.
hm... feels like im comparing windows and osx...

mm thats all i remember at the moment...

I have to agree with the comments above about Android in general compared to iOS. UI consistency, smoothness of the general OS and a stable marketplace are great features of iOS.

Android has heaps of good customisability, but negatives such as:
1. Fragmentation
2. UI has a definite noticeable input lag even on flagship devices
3. Inconsistent marketplace experience (the fact that there are 3rd party marketplaces popping up doesn't help, and the payment systems)

these put me off. I love how android is so tightly integrated into gmail, reader, calender etc. I love how you can customise your keyboard input type (T9, swype, swiftkey) and how you can toggle on 3G/Wifi/GPS/BT directly on your home screen.

However I figured the best option would be to use iPhone 4 for now (bought one yesterday) and there's no reason I can't switch to Android once it matures in say, a year or so.
