Ok. The gist that I gathered so far, is that to get an iPad, you can go through:

1. Fly to US yourself, or get your mate to get it.

2. Ebay: delivery charge + custom fees may be a tad too much and troublesome.

3. Ship from US service: delivery charge + custom + handling fee from US websites.

4. Trademe: inflated price, but the quickest way you get your hands on one.

5. Toshcomputers: Probably most economical option, but at the expense of looooonnnngggg wait list :P.

6. Mobicity: Still pricey compared to what Tosh has to offer.

7. Wait till it comes in Aussie, or god knows when to NZ.

Hmm... that's all the method that i know of at the moment...

Yes, that is a reasonable summary. for purchases in NZ try to buy from a company, i.e. on TradeMe, etc., as the Consumer Guarantees Act otherwise doesn't apply, and since Apple does not yet service the iPads in NZ you do want some recourse in case the new darling breaks down...

Wow...you know what that means???!!! It means..."The iPad being twirled around Vodafone this afternoon belonged to a member of the company’s marketing department, who bought it during a jaunt to the US."

Worth a try:
Does anyone in the HB area have an iPad i could borrow for a day or two?
I only want it to demonstrate to some community groups (and schools) that I work with.

Hmm... that's all the method that i know of at the moment...

If you get someone to send it to you from the states (a friend) do you have to pay customs or can you just put the value as $5 and not pay anything??

Probably not, but in the unlikely event of lost in post it means you wont get the insurance payout...

Remember that ALL items are x-rayed by MAF upon arrival and MAF regularly refers items to Customs if they pick up on declaration inconsistencies.

I activated the Ipad with Itunes on my laptop logged into the NZ store and synced the apps I already had. After the sync on the Ipad I changed the account to my U.S account, which gets the App Store app working and bought a few U.S apps.

Now itunes happly syncs both lots of apps, although the Ipad cant update NZ store bought apps, so this needs to be done on the laptop and they sync across fine.

Always! I have UK and US accounts as well as my Kiwi one. Never had a problem with apps and movies from all three accounts syncing with my iPhone or AppleTV, all co-existing peacefully!

So if you're OK with the surcharge and shop wisely, it can be well worth doing.
