Possible answer, but still just other users guessing really. Someone on that thread commented it has been like this for several iOS iterations - it hasn't. Just confirmed this with colleague who hasn't updated from 10 yet.
That thread stated it changes to the headphone icon to show that something is connected. That is true for headphones but not all bluetooth devices, when I connect to the handsfree in my car the icon doesn't change at all, which now leaves me with no visible indication that it is connected.
If this is intentional, it is one of the dumbest things iOS has ever done. The old way makes so much more sense, no icon=bluetooth off, dull icon=bluetooth on but nothing connected, solid icon=bluetooth on and device connected. It's fine to changed the solid icon to a headphone symbol to indicate what kind of device is connected, I'm pretty sure they did that in 10. But to remove the dull icon that indicates no connection is ridiculous.
I'm really hoping this is a bug that will be fixed.
As mentioned the headphone icon has been there in iOS 10 as well this is not new. The always on black icon regardless if something is connected or not IS NEW to ios11.
It does flash when something connects but only if you are looking at your device while it connects will you know.
As stated before I feel this is a bug not a feature. But if it is supposed to be like this it is pretty dumb and makes no logical sense in any scenario.
scuwp: When my headphones connect I get a small headphones icon that shows up. Does this happen with other Bluetooth devices? Just wondering if the active icon has simply been replaced with additional icons that show up when connected. Could explain why the greyed out Bluetooth icon has gone.
Same with my headphones but when my car bluetooth is connected I cannot tell any more as the icon always looks the same. The headphones icon only comes on when the cars bluetooth is in use... as soon as the call is dropped the headphones icon disappears.

FYI to everyone, this HAS NOT changed in iOS 11.0.2.
