S3 was $1049
S4 will be $1149

iPhone 5 16GB is $1029
iPhone 5 32Gb is $1199

Not sure about the GB on these S3/4 prices, I assume 16GB, maybe 32GB for the S4

So the pricing at the top end is not a lot different, and the same rules of depreciation will apply as with all products. But as the OP states the iDevices seem to hold on a bit better on resale.

alright. telco's prices for S3 where high in the release, then dropped slightly. now selling for $850 NEW (but you can get new for $550 (buying in NZ), we are not looking at parallel imported, right?)

on trademe - decent s3 costs over $450 - does not matter bought today or year ago.

if we want to generalize, retained value of s3 is over 50% but iphones is below 50%. so which one is better now? :)

sure, there will be someone who buys iphone4 for $500.

You are quoting your overinflated Telecom store prices. As Technofreak pointed out above, the issue probably comes down to Apple's contol of supply. Telecom charged $850 odd for the s3 now, while other retailers sell it for about $650. Can't do this with apple, so apple appear to hold values better. Again, this point is covered above.

Also, you are only comparing Apple / Samsung, not Apple / Competition. Samsung is not the only android supplier (have you seen the Xperia Z? It's an amazing android phone at only about $800 in stores - or $1000 from Telecom).

The Nexus 4 is at the top of top end, and can be bought, new for about $600. It was released after the iPhone 5 (so is a new model phone) and is consistently ranked as a better phone (see: http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Google-Nexus-4,Apple-iPhone-5/phones/7531,7378, has a user rating of 9.8 to the iPhone 5's 7.6).

It just seems so stupid to pay more for a phone, so you can sell it for more. Personally, I love my iPhone but I will not spend money on another one when phones like the Nexus 4 are literally 1/2 the price and do the job so much better.

Going by your figures your S3 that is one year old that costs $850 and sells for $450 is the best option. The ones that bought at $1049, not so much. However, in general, the thread indicates that iPhones hold value well

The thread was about general iPhone resell prices, not about a comparison berween the pricing of top end phones, though.

Perhaps not, but prices paid for similar top tier phones are relevant as the more a phone costs new, the more it costs second hand, generally speaking. I disagree it holds its value better, it just appears to do so because other phones I.e the s3 have such a range of prices over different stores

The all hold value better than a two year old laptop. A $1000 laptop two years later would be hard pressed to fetch $400 in my opinion.

I agree that they don't hold their value better.There is a perceived impression that they do, because when you buy an iphone, you usually pay close to the RRP as the pricing is so controlled. Yet with an droid, you can pay anywhere between 20-40% less than the RRP if you shop around. If you pay 40% less than the RRP, then that device will likely hold it's value a lot more than an iphone.
