I think the Skinny prepay plan for $16 every 28 days with 1.25G data with rollover is a much better plan than Spark. The minutes also rollover. Next size plan is $26 with 2.5G. Most older folk don’t use the phone for anything more than calls when away from the house so even at the lower priced plan, the data will soon build up. If you add the Skinny app, he can top up easily himself, it’s very intuitive and easy to use for oldies.

Turn off background app refresh in settings so it doesn’t chew his data and be careful about putting widgets on his home screen that keep updating, like transit or weather. Home Screen widgets can be hogs.

Thanks for all the great advice.

We did look at 2degrees and Skinny plans, but decided to just change one thing for the time being, that thing being the phone.

I'm monitoring the data usage and so far it looks pretty minimal, but maybe thats because nothing has updated itself yet. Early days.

For now he is enjoying being able to make calls and texts with way less manoeuvres.

Handsomedan:

Their greatest resource was the intuitive nature of iOS.

Easy as paper and pen. I remember my 1 yr old son easily navigating our ipad. Couldn't read, but, knew which icons to press.
