mattwnz:
It is really amazing that they are still selling the ipad 2, and pressume they will keep selling it for the next year too. I still have one, and it performs well, but it is old in terms of it's age. I think the only reason they still have it is becuase of the ipad mini, which is basically the same hardware spec.

I think the only reason they are still producing, selling and supporting the iPad 2 is that its the iPad that has had the most sales AND is the version that they sold heavily into schools and business. Both the education and business sectors baulk at being forced to pay out for updated hardware when the hardware they invested in is still working well for them.

A friend in the US told me (I don't know how accurately) that his school introduced iPads a few months after iPad 2 was released, on an undertaking from Apple that they would be supported for 5 years. Anything could happen with Apple but the way things are going now with iPad 2 I wouldn't be at all surprised if they don't have a five-year life.

Not really. I don't know what they used to cost but right now iPad 2 16GB is US$399. They only sell the 16GB now. For what it is, that seems pretty pricey to me.

I'm really hoping they become available in general retailers fairly smartly. Next week is my 25th anniversary for working with my company, and I get a "$500 gift" according to the HR website. I am hoping whoever is in charge of that gets me something nice and generic like Westfield vouchers so I can put the money towards my new iPad :) I won't be ordering until I know exactly what I'm going to get because the budget doesn't stretch to forking out full price for the model I want (decided on the Air 64GB).

Interestingly, as I was typing the above, I got an email from Apple Australia inviting me to purchase an iPad Air for $799AUD. Even if you very generously put the exchange rate as low as .80, that's still $50 cheaper than the $1099NZD we will be paying.

I'm not suggesting for a moment it's worth going over to Australia to buy one if you live here, just commenting on the fact that they pay comparatively less than we do. Obviously the disparity is not as big as with US pricing, but still it exists.

Went into JB Hifi on Queen Street, Auckland just before to ask them if they knew anything about when they might be available in store. I was told definitely launch day Tuesday and they already had been delivered and were in a sealed cabinet out the back. I cheekily asked just how big the cabinet was and was told there are quite a few iPads.

I asked the same thing of Noel Leeming just down the road (as I have purchased my last two iPads there and it is a touch closer to my work) but the guy claimed he had no knowledge of a release date. I tried my best to push him telling him that JB Hifi had already taken delivery, but he insisted they had none out the back. I guess I'll be off to JB Hifi Tuesday morning to get one then :-)

Excellent news! A little trip to the Albany store might be on the cards next weekend, I think. By then I'll know if work is gifting me something I can put towards the purchase.

We have 15% gst. Australia has 10%. There is your difference right there.

Interesting, perhaps JB have a special deal with Apple?
We are an Apple Authorised Reseller and I've just checked both official Apple NZ distributors websites and no sign of the new iPads so not available for us to order yet.

leo0787sx: I called a few places and the only ones with a solid date were YooBee, midnight launch for the 5th but told to keep checking the website.

Don't think anyone saw it on the last page but Yoobee are an Apple reseller and getting them for midnight launch for 5th.

What's really annoying is looking at the features offered in the different countries. Dictation is available in Australia, for example, but not on the NZ model. Apple should discount NZ iPads as they are nowhere near as fully featured as the models sold into some other countries.

Dictation works, you just need to select English (Australian) for the voice. It's obviously designed for the Aussie accent but still works pretty well for kiwis I think

Ah, good point. So we're both paying way more than the US. I feel better now ;)
