I woke up at 4:30am on Friday, went to the online Apple Store and ordered one.

Quite happy to wait 2-3 weeks to get one - in fact the leather cover arrived today!Only advice I need, who should I go to for a data plan: TNZ, VFNZ or 2D

Go TNZ. It's fast, great coverage and prepaid works out to be quite affordable.

I was on the fence but saw the iPad 2 in the shop at the weekend. Had a play and decided I want one.

Unfortunately Yoobee said new stock may not arrive for up to 3 weeks. On the fence now and deciding whether I go through Apple's website or just hold off for new stock.

@gingereejit I'm trying out Telecom NZ's 500MB $29.95 microSIM data. So far seems pretty good.

If you are pretty much staying within major CBDs like AKL, WLG, CHC, ZQN then you can stay with 2Degree's $20 for 1GB for MBB, but the starter pack $20 has 100MB national data to use.

Vodafone's $20 for 250MB is ok I guess.

I'm field testing the Telecom NZ on my partner's iPad2 and I got few weeks until my White one arrives, so it will give me plenty of time to see if Telecom's offering is suitable or not.

Internet is my backyard...

Looks like the wait at the Apple store is now: Ships: 4-5 weeks

I will see if I can get one at the stores, if I can't get one in the next 2-3 weeks, I'll probably hold off until I travel later in the year and get it duty free.

I am not sure if you will, as the retailer told me that their wait time for new stock would be the same as shown on the apple website, and they had taken a lot of orders down for them. Buying online cuts out the middleman, but you don't save anything apart from free freight.

In theory it's just the value of the GST, since that's the only duty that would apply to general electronic products.

thats quite a saving.
the 32gig wifi 3G one i bought at launch for 1149.00 ends up being $976.65
A saving of $172.35

No, it's a common mathematical misconception that if the GST rate is 15% then removing the GST component will make the item 15% cheaper. In fact whilst the GST inclusive price is 15% more than the GST exclusive price, the GST exclusive price is actually only 13% less than the GST inclusive price. You can do some simple linear algebra to prove this.

A saving of $172.35

The theoretical saving would be $149.37 based on the 13% noted above. I say 'theoretical' because in my experience duty free stores don't always give you the full benefit of the duty and tax saving. So, make sure you're aware of the value of what you're buying rather than just assuming that you're getting a good deal just because you're buying duty free.

Incidentally I bought my original iPad last year at the Apple Store in Chadstone, Melbourne and was able to reclaim the Australian GST upon leaving Australia. Strictly speaking I was liable to pay NZ GST upon my return but I was lucky enough that customs staff waved me straight through as it's at their discretion whether to collect small amounts like this.

If you buy it for business, you can claim back the GST anyway.

Does anyone know if both telecoms and 2degrees micro sims will will with the ipad2. I see that vodafones micro sim for ther ipad1 doesn't work in the ipad 2, and you have to get a replacement. So I am not sure if the same applies with other providers?

As far as I know the Telecom microsims that worked in the first, still work in the iPad 2. Not sure about 2degrees though.

Thanks. I thought 2 degrees could require a different card, as I believe their network is similar and partly shared in some areas with vodafones.

I bought a telecom preaid iPad xt microsim from dse and put it in my ipad2.
It works fine and comes preloaded with 500 Meg, it cost $30 and they give you
300 Meg then 200 Meg free for the rest of the month.
If you dont use up the 300 Meg they charge you 10cents per Meg off the balance on the card for the month.
For example if you only use 100 Meg in the month $10 comes off the balance.
That's about all I use every month. I've been using the same with my iPhone for over a year now.
It's really fast and I haven't had a coverage problem anywhere in nz yet.
I stopped using vodafone about 18 months ago due to coverage problems and it going back to GPRS all the time when the signal got weak making data reaalllyy slowwwww.
2 degrees I haven't tried yet sorry so can't comment on them.

The XT one sounds good especially with the coverage, except it doesn't seem to have a fixed cap to stop you going over a fixed amount per month? The vodafone ipad plans do seem to have fixed caps, so you don't go over a fixed $ amount each month.
