Well I was quite looking forward to getting , all be it a 2009 model macbook air.

The unit is in lovely condition and I was feeling that a keen deal was made. Then I booted up to find no sound.

Three hours later

I am in the process of doing a fresh install of the o/s to see if that solves the issue , which after internet research is a extremely common issue.

I have a tried a multitude of suggested "Fixes". Living the outback (wanganui) I cant take a quick trip to the, what do they cal it genius bar?

I wonder why they are not like cars. When they get a common fault they do a recall.

Anyway I think I will wait to see if this reset fixes the problem

The only thing I didn't try , other than the thing that would fix the problem, is to do a "pram" ? reset is that the right word.

I f no luck will see about sending back to the seller.

ho...hummm...

The previous owner hasn't broken off a headphone plug inside the headphone socket?

Macs only last for 12 months in you're unlucky, or 3 years if you're lucky. yours is way past a Mac's use-by date!

If it can be proven to be an actual fault and there is enough consumer noise, they do offer recalls. They did it for crappy graphics cards, HP did power cords etc, etc etc.

As to why it is different for cars - cars cost 10-100 times as much and have a nasty habit of causing death when they fail.

Don't think anyone has been killed by a lack of sound on their macbook air.

Edit: Buying a 6 year old laptop?

I suppose you could substitute the word "Mac" for some PC brands too.

Even if it doesn't break the computing technology of 6 years ago is pretty archaic.

Couldn't disagree more. Never had a computer only last a year, Apple or any other brand.

The easiest way to see whether it's a software or hardware fault is to reboot while holding Cmd-Opt-P-R. If it hasn't "chimed" after 20 seconds then it's hardware.

I have never had a computer die prematurely. Usually the harddrive dies, or diskdrive die, or fans get nosiey or stop working, or a monitor backlight may fail, but they are generally the only failures I have had.

If you purchased it off trademe, then probably not much of a come back, as they may claim you caused it. Is there another way to output sound, such as hdmi?

One always sets one self up for ridicule when one posts threads like this one. Thankfully there are the gems like yourself who make helpful comments

I did what you said and got a "DuuuuH" sound from the thing . So form that we can conclude that it is likely to be software?

Yep, the sound hardware is obviously working so it'll be fixable in software :)

Do you get sound from anything else now?

Maybe post a screenshot of system prefs -> sound -> output.
